APC will end rule of PDP scavengers –Tinubu

OPPOSITION figures on Thursday stepped up the marketing of their newly-christened joint party, the All Progressive Party, with a promise that the new platform would bring an end to the rule of the Peoples Democratic Party.

Former governor of Lagos State and National Leader of the Action Congress of Nigeria, a key component of the new alliance, Bola Tinubu, described the years of PDP in power as the rule of “scavengers and wayfarers.”

“What we have now are wayfarers, scavengers in the corridors of power and apologists, professionals whose ethics evaporate the moment they come in contact with the paraphernalia of power.

“But there is help coming. Help is on the way as the opposition moves to form a broad-based coalition that will send these characters out of power and put into gear the Nigerian project.”

The teacher was sweating. The pupils who were huddled together in fives on each of the long wooden chairs in the overpopulated classroom were doing everything but learning. From his countenance, the overworked teacher was only waiting for his lesson to be over.

The classroom that ordinarily should sit 40 has 120 pupils. While some of them were playing at the back of the classroom, others were busy doing various things.

Now, the frustrated teacher picked out his handkerchief from his pocket, cleaned his sweat-soaked face and yelled at the noisy pupils.

 “Stop making a noise! If you don’t want to learn go back home,” he said. His action only provoked more noise as some of the pupils complained in hushed tones that the classroom was not comfortable for them to learn.

AFCON 2013: I should be fit for final —Moses

Fitness experts spent the greater part of Thursday working on the pair of Victor Moses and Emmanuel Emenike in a surely desperate bid to get the strikers ready for the Sunday final match against Burkina Faso. But even as he still limps, Moses has assured fans of the Nigerian team that he hopes to be fit enough for the most important game of the 2013 Africa Nations Cup.

After numerous inquiries made by journalists on their fitness in Johannesburg on arrival, the Chelsea attacker who scored Nigeria’s two goals against Ethiopia used his Twitter platform to answer the questions in one statement.

He tweeted, “Lot of people asking about my injury. I’m having treatment and hopefully should be fine for the final.”

El-Rufai’s book is full of lies –Atiku

The former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, has come under fire from former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, who accused him of writing alleged fiction for self-glorification at the expense of truth.

Reacting to el-Rufai?s book, entitled, The Accidental Public Servant, the Media Office of Atiku, dismissed the book as a collection of “fiction, half-truths, exaggeration and reflection of selective memory”.

Atiku was particularly piqued by el-Rufai’s claim that he had almost resigned as the former Director General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises because of alleged persistent pressure and interference by him(the former VP), who was then the Chairman of the National Council on Privatisation.

Internationally - acclaimed Nigerian musician D'Banj, real name Dapo Daniel Oyebanjo, is excited about being asked to perform his popular motivational ditty, Top of the World, at the Afcon closing ceremony at National Stadium in Crown Mines outside Soweto on Sunday evening.

"I am honoured and words fail to describe the warmth I get from my fans in this country," D'Banj said. "I am looking forward to having more than 6.6-billion viewers globally watch my performance."

GEJ Not Going To South Africa, Sends Delegation To Support The Super Eagles: Match Shows On Local Stations

According to sport analyst Bimbo Adeola of StarFm(Lagos), Nigerians are likely to watch the AFCON final match live on local TV stations this coming Sunday. CAF broadcast rights owner, BON, have reached an agreement that the match will be broadcast live on local stations.

The two men have been in held in prison for about a week. They are being prosecuted by the Federal Government for collecting $620, 000 (N93 million) as bribe from business man, Femi Otedola, to remove his company, Zenon Oil, from the list of indicted companies
The Judge, Mudashiru Oniyangi, granted them bail on the sum of N10 million each and two sureties each in like sum. He also directed them to submit their international passports with the court registrar, adding that they can only travel outside Nigeria with the permission of the court.
The Judge based his decision to grant bail on the discretionary powers of the court and the inability of the prosecution to file a counter affidavit to the one filed by the accused persons detailing their reasons for asking for bail.
He fixed April 10 and 17 for hearing.

Controversy Trails Expulsion Of 28 Redeemers University Students

The expulsion of 28 students by Redeemer University for allegedly failing drug tests has sparked a big row.

The tests were conducted last November for 42 students, who were asked to go for “routine tests”.

After resumption this year, some of them were told that they “tested positive” and last Friday, some of those who “tested positive” got expulsion letters; others got theirs on Monday.

The institution’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Adetunji Adeleye, said the decision was taken in line with the school’s values and philosophy “to raise godly children”, but the students are alleging unfairness.

No regret dropping Osaze, others – Keshi

Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi has said that he does not need all the good players in Nigeria to build a strong team and as such does not regret leaving out any player for the African cup.

Keshi dropped West Bromwich striker Osaze Odemwingie and Levante top scorer Obafemi Martins and kept faith in many players who had not appeared in any major international tournament at the senior level – some of them were picked from the Nigerian league.

The coach said most Nigerians did not understand why he dropped the players, noting that the present team has performed excellently without the players he rejected.

He said, “When we were in Portugal, there were lots of problems in Nigeria because I decided to drop some of my good players. Most Nigerians did not understand but I know why I dropped them. You don’t need all the good players to do the job for you in a tournament; sometimes what you need is strong mentality in the team.

ACN, CPC, two others form All Progressive Congress

A coalition of four opposition political parties on Wednesday, in Abuja, announced the name of their new party, All Progressive Congress.

The four parties that gave birth to the new APC are the Action Congress of Nigeria, All Nigeria Peoples Party, All Progressive Grand Alliance and Congress for Progressive Change.

The new name was announced to showcase the success of their merger talks. Just 24 hours earlier, 10 governors on the platform of the four parties had met in Lagos where they endorsed their parties’ merger plan, meant to wrestle power from the Peoples Democratic Party.

Briefing journalists in Abuja, the Chairman of the Merger Committee of the ACN, Chief Tom Ikimi, said the new name was arrived at by all the parties involved.

Ikimi also read the communiqué issued at the end of the meeting which endorsed the merger and the new name.

Obasanjo made four huge mistakes in office – El-Rufai

A former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nasir el-Rufai, who also played a key role in the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has listed four mistakes which he said the former president made while in office.

These mistakes, according to him, nearly marred the relationship that Obasanjo had with members of his Economic Management Team.

El-Rufai stated this in his yet-to-be-released book, titled, “The Accidental Public Servant.”

He said in the book,  “Many of us felt that Obasanjo made four huge mistakes in his Presidency.

“The first was that Obasanjo had borrowed money to acquire certain government assets. The shares were offered to many government officials.”

Among these government officials, el-Rufai listed former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and the then (and still serving) Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

Burkina Faso shock Ghana to reach final after shoot-out

Eagles destroy Mali to reach final

A flurry of first half goals ensured that the Super Eagles stamped their dominance over the Eagles of Mali as Nigeria moved to the final of the Africa Nations Cup for the first time since 2000.

Elderson Echiejile scored the curtain raiser in the 25th minute and five minutes later, Brown Ideye doubled the lead before impressive Emmanuel Emenike made it three in the 44th minute. Substitute Ahmed Musa scored his first in the competition when he wrapped the game with a fourth goal in the 60th minute. Mali got a consolation goal in the 75th minute through Diara Mady.

The match started slowly as both teams tried to explore their opponents’ weaknesses. But Chelsea star Victor Moses expressed his impatience in the third minute when he fired a lame shot at Mali’s Samassa Mamadou rather than continue with the gradual build-up.

Sellers of pornographic materials arrested by Lagos state taskforce

The Lagos State Taskforce on Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit has begun clampdown on distributors and sellers of pornographic materials across Lagos, Southwest Nigeria.

Four distributors of pornographic materials were arrested at Cele Bus Stop on Oshodi-Apapa Expressway on Tuesday by the taskforce after the police raided the area. Those arrested will be arraigned before the Special Offences Court at the taskforce yard and prosecuted for selling obscene materials.

The sellers of the materials arrested are Yinka Dada, 25 years; Udoh Nne, 29 years; Sylvester Obodoe, 18 years and Poopola Bamidele, 18 years. (pictured above)

2015: Why we want to rescue Nigeria – Opposition govs

TEN governors drawn from four leading opposition parties yesterday rose from a meeting in Lagos vowing to rescue Nigeria from the abyss she had been flung into by the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
Rising from a six-hour meeting at the Lagos House, Marina, the governors elected on the platform of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP, All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, and Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, said rescuing Nigeria was a mission that must be accomplished and the surest way of achieving this was through a merger of the opposition parties to beat PDP at the 2015 polls.

Those at the meeting included Governors Babtunde Fashola (Lagos), Ogbeni Raufu Aregbesola (Osun), Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun), Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti) and Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo) of the ACN.

AFCON 2013: Mali ‘ll be tougher than Cote d’Ivoire – Keshi

 

Nigeria’s coach Stephen Keshi says he is delighted to come up against former team Mali in an Africa Cup of Nations semi-final  today.
Keshi worked in Mali for two years before being fired after failing to get the team beyond the group phase of the 2010 tournament in Angola.

“It’s a good feeling because I had two wonderful years in Mali. The Mali people were so nice and I enjoyed my relationship with the players, some of whom have kept in touch,” said Keshi on Tuesday.
“But in this game I have to be professional because I’m a professional coach and after the game we could get together again.”
Unlike the quarter-final against the Ivory Coast, Nigeria will be favoured to win, but Keshi, 51, insists both teams are favourites in this clash.

NFF promises Eagles $20,000 each to beat Mali

There is no end to motivation for the Super Eagles of Nigeria in their quest to win the 2013 Africa Nations Cup, as the Nigeria Football Federation dangles $20,000 at each player to beat the Eagles of Mali. The NFF opened the trips to the banks with the $15,000 bonus for the quarter final victory over Ivory Coast before the officials reconfirmed the bonus earmarked for the Wednesday match.

Even doubts were initially raised over the shortfall in their budget the federation officials have said in Durban that they are sticking to their initial plans to pay them graduated bonuses as the competition enters the final stages.

Yobo, Keita renew rivalry

Super Eagles captain, Joseph Yobo, says he is happy at renewing the rivalry between himself and Mali captain, Seydou Keita, which dates back to the years when both of them featured for their countries at the U20 level.

“That is a long time now and its amazing that the world still remembers but really records matter little to me, I just want the team to do well, but I’m happy that after several years both of us are still playing active football and are the captains of our national teams,” Yobo said on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Nigerian musician, Flavour, who was in the stands when the Eagles shocked Ivory Coast in the quarter-final clash on Sunday, has said he expects the Super Eagles striker and a personal friend of his, Emmanuel Emenike, to score more goals and power the country to the title.

Emenike has so far scored three goals for Nigeria in the running for the top scorer’s award.

Flavour is again expected in the stands to cheer his friend on Wednesday at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, South Africa.

Family friend rapes, impregnates 15-year-old girl

Before July 2012 the families of Israel Jolaosho and Taju Adejumo, of Adefemi Ogundipe Street, Meiran in Ifako Ijaiye Local Government Area of Lagos State, were best of friends.

But the relationship went sour recently after Adejumo, 40, allegedly raped Jolaosho’s 15-year-old daughter, Deborah.

After the rape, Deborah, who was a virgin, missed her period. subsequent medical examination showed that the 15-year-old pupil of Meiran Community Junior Secondary School was pregnant.

When Punch Metro visited the Jolaoshos on Monday, Deborah was seven-month pregnant and had been forced to drop out of school because of her condition.

DR Congo has the youngest and oldest players at the tournament. Its goalie Muteba Kidiaba Robert is the oldest player, 37. Chancel Mbemba Mangulu and Budge Manzia are the youngest players in the tournament- 18.

Three countries participating in the Africa Cup of Nations 2013 have already won the competition at least twice. Ghana (1963, 1965, 1978 and 1982 winners), Nigeria (1980 and 1994 winners) and DR Congo (1968 and 1974 winners).

Ghana holds the records for the most consecutive appearances at the African Cup of Nations finals- 1963, 1965, 1968 and 1970.

Budgets’ll be tailored to encourage manufacturing – Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday said the country’s budget for the next two years and probably beyond 2015 would be tailored in a way to encourage the manufacturing sector.
He said the decision was based on his administration’s conviction that the nation could not improve its economic performance without encouraging the private sector, especially the manufacturing arm.
Jonathan spoke while inaugurating the 18-member Board of the National Competitiveness Council of Nigeria chaired by the Minister of Trade and Investment, Mr. Olusegun Aganga.
The council is saddled with the task of increasing productivity and sales for local businesses, and will see to the expansion and creation of more markets for products made in Nigeria.

Confusion in FCT over bomb scare

Confusion enveloped the Federal Capital Territory on Monday following the reported planting of a bomb at the Nigerian Postal Services in Area 10, Abuja.

Many FCT residents became apprehensive as they sent out text messages, warning their friends and relations to steer clear of the NIPOST office.

Our correspondent learnt that the police anti-bomb squad arrived at the scene and removed a package suspected to be Improvised Explosive Device from the post office premises.

The Commissioner of Police in the FCT, Mr. Aderenle Shinaba, who briefed reporters on the scare, however, said there was no bomb explosion in any part of the territory.

He said what was rumoured as explosion was the sound from a controlled detonation carried out on the suspected package by men of the anti-bomb squad.

FG may dump Ribadu report on oil industry

There are strong indications that the Federal Government has commenced moves to kill the report of the Petroleum Revenue Special Task force headed by ex-boss of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Nuhu Ribadu.

Three months after the Ribadu panel submitted its report on November 2, 2012, the much-expected White Paper that would make the recommendations contained in the document implementable has not been released.

Checks by The PUNCH in Abuja on Monday indicated that the Federal Government appeared to have lost interest in the report, the content of which was hailed by many analysts at the time of its presentation.

A top government source confided in one of our correspondents on Monday that the Federal Government considered the Ribadu report as “not comfortable” and that most of its “embarrassing” recommendations would be missing whenever the Wogu committee submits its report.

Drogba, Kalou tip Super Eagles for title

Ivory Coast captain Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou have tipped their conquerors, the Super Eagles, for the AFCON title after knocking the erstwhile tournament favourites out of the competition.

The former Chelsea duo praised the Nigeria team for their courage and display in Sunday’s quarter-final clash.

“I was very impressed with the Super Eagles’ performance against us (Ivory Coast). It’s proof of hard work, relentlessness and the sign of a world-class team in preparation,” Drogba said.

Nigeria/Cote d’Ivoire match: Man (40) slumps, dies

A forty-year-old man, Moshood Ismail, on Sunday collapsed and died at a viewing centre in Abeokuta, Ogun State, while watching the match between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and the Elephants of Cote.

Ismail, a father of two and an engineer with the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency, caused a commotion inside the viewing centre when he suddenly collapsed in the early minutes of the game.

An eyewitness, who pleaded anonymity, told our correspondent that Ismail became agitated and later collapsed when an Ivorien defender deflected a goal-bound shot from Victor Moses.

Nigeria's Finance Minister, Okonjo Iweala Targeted in a Letter containing Explosive Device

A tragic Monday in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja was averted at the premises of the Nigerian Postal Service located at Area 10, when a suspicious parcel believed to be containing Improvised Explosive Device was diffused.

The parcel according to an eyewitness was said to have been brought in on Saturday for posting and addressed to the Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, but the suspicious nature of the parcel prompted the postal personnel on duty to alert the police anti bomb squad who later diffused it Monday morning.

The best passwords are at least seven characters long, and hopefully as long as 14 characters. The shorter a password is, the easier it is to crack.
