Mugabe ready to accept Zimbabwe poll result

 Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe is ready to cede power if elections planned for the troubled African nation do not go his way, Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai said on Wednesday.
Tsvangirai said he did not believe Mugabe, who disputed election results in 2008 and eventually retained the presidency under a power-sharing deal, would risk another round of violence in Zimbabwe.
He said 88-year-old Mugabe, who has led the country since independence in 1980, wanted to protect his legacy and would abide by the result of a ballot scheduled to be held within the next 12 months.
“I’m sure he will accept the result,” Tsvangirai told reporters during an official trip to New Zealand.
“I do not see any reason why he should plunge the country again into another dispute.
“I think he’s committed, for his own legacy and the legacy of the country, to move forward and he has to accept the result if it is conducted in a free and fair manner.”
Tsvangirai confirmed he would stand against his arch-rival Mugabe in the election, which is set to be held under a new constitution, a draft of which was finalised on Friday.

Professor John Evans Fiifi Atta Mills was born on July 21st, 1944, at Tarkwa in the Western Region of Ghana and hails from Ekumfi Otuam in the Mfantsiman East Constituency of the Central Region. He launched a lifelong interest in acquiring knowledge at Achimota Secondary School, where he obtained his General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level in 1963.

To further his education, he attended the University of Ghana, Legon, where he received a bachelor's degree and professional certificate in Law (1967). While earning a PhD in Law from the prestigious School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London, John Evans Atta Mills was selected as a Fulbright scholar at the equally prestigious Stanford Law School in the United States of America.

Reps divided over impeachment plot against Jonathan

There were indications on Tuesday that members of the House of Representatives were divided over the threat to impeach President Goodluck.

The division in the House, particularly among the Peoples Democratic Party’s lawmakers, came to the fore on Tuesday when the Chairman of the Committee on Capital Market, Mr. Ibrahim El-Sudi, said that the threat was the handiwork of the opposition in the lower chamber of the National Assembly.

But the House spokesman, Mr. Zakari Mohammed, in an interview with one of our correspondents, faulted El-Sudi, saying he was merely expressing his personal opinion.

The lawmakers had on Thursday accused the President of breaching the 2012 Appropriation Act and poorly executing the budget. They also adopted a motion giving Jonathan up to September to achieve “100 per cent execution” of the budget or face impeachment proceedings.

The motion was endorsed by all members of the House.

El-Sudi however on Tuesday, on Sunrise Daily, a live breakfast programme of a private television, Channels TV, gave an impression that the decision was the idea of members of the opposition in the House.

When one of the television presenters sought to know from El-Sudi why the PDP-dominated House was issuing an impeachment threat against the President, the lawmaker said the threat came from members of the opposition.

He added that contrary to the widely-publicised reports of the impeachment threat, the House of Representatives had not taken any decision on what would happen by September.

El-Sudi said, “It (the impeachment threat) came from members of the opposition and they are entitled to their opinion. It was not a resolution of the House.

Air Force to build bomb detonating robot

The Nigerian Air Force has begun a process of developing a robot capable of detonating high calibre bomb.
Air Vice Marshal John Oshoniyi, the commandant of the NAF Institute of Technology, Kaduna, disclosed this at a pre-graduation press conference in Kaduna on Monday.
He added that the institute had also developed an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle for surveillance and intelligence gathering which could assist government in a crisis-prone areas of the country.
According to Oshoniyi, the robot, when completed, would be of great assistance to government in checking the series of bombing across the country by terrorist groups.
He explained that the robot required no human being to be physically present at the scene of bomb before the detonation of a bomb.
Speaking on the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle codenamed “Amebo”, which he claimed to be the first in the continent, the commandant said its development was borne out of President Goodluck Jonathan’s transformation agenda.
“AFIT has, for the past few years, been focusing on defence–related Research and Development activities as part of its contributions to the realisation of Mr. President’s vision,” Oshoniyi said.
“It is pertinent to note that following the successful launch of our Unmanned Aerial Vehicle-Amebo II last year, a modified and much improved version of the codenamed ‘Amebo III’ was produced and exhibited during the recently concluded Air Expo 2012, organised by the Nigerian Air Force. This latest version is awaiting test flight.
“In furtherance of our research efforts, the institute has been attracting interest from overseas companies who are seeking to collaborate in the area of the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle development.”
He added that the Brazilian Air Force had given approval for its equivalent of AFIT to collaborate with NAF, especially in the areas of research ideas and staff development.
“All these collaborative efforts are geared towards repositioning the Nigerian Air Force for sustained employment of air power, in the realisation of the vision of the current Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Mohammed Dikko Umar,” he said.
“It is equally worth mentioning that some state governments have indicated their interest in partnering with the institute towards manpower development for the respective states.”
