EIGHT people died in an accident which occurred on the Azare-Potiskum road in Bauchi State, just as the Federal RoadSafety Corps (FRSC) recovered N520,030 from a commercial vehicle involved in the accident.
Briefing journalists on the incident in Bauchi, onWednesday, the Sector Commander of the FRSCin the state, Mr Zakariya Mamadu, said the accident happened last Saturday, 20km away from Azare.
He said a Honda car with registration number BC 105 ABJ and a Volkswagen Golf commercial vehicle, withregistration number AX 462 MAG, were involved in the accident, adding that it was as a result of over-speeding by thevehicles.
The Honda car, according to the sector commander, was on its way to Maiduguri from Kano with one male, one female and a one-year-old baby as itsoccupants, while the Volkswagen Golf was heading for Kano from Damaturu, carrying five businessmen who had shops at Jajere Shopping Complex in theYobe State capital.
The businessmen, he said, were on their way to buy goods, adding that the money recovered belonged to them and had since been handed over to the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the shopping complex, ModuJeka.
While warning drivers todrive carefully, especially during the rainy season, Mamadu stated that, “a driver is expected to rest for at least 20 minutes in every six hours of driving. There is the need for the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) to monitor the conduct of their members.”
