The chairman of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Mr Sampson Akpabi, has said that out of 1.5 million candidates who sat for the examination this year, only 350,000 would be admitted.
He made this clarification on the occasion of the 2011 combined technical committee meeting for the Unified Tertiary Institution MatriculationExaminations (UTME) admission exercise holding in Owerri, Imo State, on Monday.
According to him, this was as result of limitedaccommodation and facilities in the universities.
He, however, noted that the number would increase by next year when the Federal Government would haveestablished federal universities in the sevenstates that are presently without federal universities.
In his address on the occasion, Imo State governor, Chief Rochas Okorocha, said the effort of the state wasnot reciprocated as the multitude of Imo candidates had lost the opportunity of being admitted into federal universities in the country.
The governor, who wasrepresented by his deputy, Sir Jude Agbaso, said for the five years under consideration, a total of451,196 Imo candidatestook the examination while only 54,091 of them were offered admissions, representing 11.99 per cent.(Nigerian Tribune)
