Pictures:September 11,2001 Attack - Day Of Terror!!!

On Tuesday, September 11, the two tallest buildings in New York — 110 stories each, a major tourist attraction, and crowded with men and women working for financial powerhouses, government agencies, restaurants, and shops — were destroyed.

Tower 2 Is Hit

9:06 am: UA Flight 175 crashes into the South Tower.

The Facade Falls

The latticework facing of the south tower came tumbling to earth upon impact of the hijacked plane.

Heading Into Danger

As World Trade Center workers descended the stairs of Tower One to escape, firefighter Mike Kehoe entered the building to help in the evacuation effort.

No Exit

As the heat from the inferno became intolerable, trapped workers were forced to jump from the towers to escape the flames.

The South Tower Collapses

In a 2,000-degree inferno, the tower crumples and crashes to the ground at 9:55 am. Minutes later, at 10:29 am, the north tower collapses.

On the Run

Downtown office workers flee the clowds of smoke that swirled through the streets of lower Manhattan when the towers crumbled.

Escape from Hell

Gray Escape

No one evaded the dense fallout that covered the entire area.

Rescuers carry Father Mychal Judge's body from Tower One. He was the first and most famous victim of the World Trade Center attack.

Blood Bond

People gathered in Federal Plaza to offer aid on the first afternoon. Thousands of New Yorkers stood in lines all over the city to donate.

Trees of Leather

Shoes, left by people running from the burning buildings, hang from branches.

Smoke in the City

Eyes were on the downtown skyline all day Tuesday. The scene above was shot from New Jersey.

Heroes and Victims

Firefighters and rescue workers worked 24/7 to save lives in lower Manhattan. More than 300 firefighters -- in some cases, entire stations -- were killed in the collapse of the World Trade Center.

Surreal

Dense smoke and bright lights created one haunting image after another.

Still Standing

Portions of the towers' facades remained upright, creating the effect of a cathedral in the mist.
