THE Bayelsa State caucus of the National Assembly (NASS) has written
to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), demanding that the state
governor, Timipre Sylva, be allowed to contest the gubernatorial primary
of the party in the state because he had already been screened and
cleared.
In a letter dated November 9, 2011, which was addressed to the
National Working Committee (NWC) of the party, the caucus claimed that
the governor, legally speaking, had been cleared and qualified to
contest in the primary election.
The caucus held that anything short of this would be a violation of the supremacy of the constitution of the party.
The caucus stated that subjecting Sylva to any further scrutiny by
the NWC was “illegal, manifestly at variance with the PDP constitution
and the Electoral Guidelines for Primary Elections 2010 and therefore
null and void.”
It argued that the uncertainty being created in the state was causing
confusion and therefore demanded “with all sense of responsibility”
that Sylva and all other aspirants screened and cleared by the
Gubernatorial Screening Committee and the Gubernatorial Screening Appeal
Panel should be allowed to contest the primary election in line with
the tenets of democracy and the rule of law.
