THE Federal Government, on Monday, reiterated its appeal to members
of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to suspend their
two-week old strike that has paralysed academic activities in the
nation’s universities.
The Minister of Education, Professor Ruqayyatu Ahmed Rufa’i, spoke in
Abuja at the presentation of the draft Four-Year Strategic Plan for the
Development of Education Sector (2011-2015) to stakeholders for their
inputs.
Professor Rufa’i, disclosed that the Federal Government was still
engaged in talks with the leadership of ASUU as a way of resolving the
Federal Government/ASUU face-off.
Considering the adverse effect a prolonged strike would have on the
students, the minister restated her call for the university teachers to
return to work while the dialogue continues.
While fielding questions from newsmen, she said: “The latest
development is that we are still talking, and we are still pleading that
they should go back to work. For two weeks now, our children have been
out of school.
“I don’t think it is something that will be healthy for us in the
future and I think ASUU will understand; even today we are meeting with
them.”
According to the minister, the four-year strategic plan, developed in
line with President Goodluck Jonathan’s transformation agenda, was
extrapolated from the ministry’s Roadmap for Nigeria’s Education sector,
the One-Year Strategy for Development of the Education Sector (May
2010-April, 2011) and the approved recommendations of the Presidential
Task Force on Education Report.
