Minister seeks end to sexual violence against women
The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajia Zainab Maina, has raised the alarm over what she described as high incidence of rape and sexual violence against women in the country.
Maina said efforts must be mobilised to end the crimes which she said had in some cases, led to the untimely death of many women and girls. The minister said this at the opening of the 14th regular meeting of the National Council on Women Affairs and Social Development in Ado-Ekiti on Friday. The meeting was hosted by the Ekiti State Ministry of Women Affairs, Social Development and Gender Empowerment.
The frequent occurrence of cases of rape especially against minors, was part of what prompted the wife of the state governor, Mrs. Bisi Fayemi, to in conjunction with the state Ministry of Women’s Affairs sponsor Gender-Based Violence Prohibition Bill recently signed into law.
The minister said sexual violence against women was pervasive as evident in incidences of rape and other forms of psychological abuse of women and girls across the country.
She said, “The incidence of rape/sexual violence across the country have assumed an alarming proportion. This is unacceptable as these acts are clearly a violation of the human rights of women.
