Two feared killed, policeman attacked

A commercial motorcycle rider, popularly called Okada rider, was feared killed on Wednesday at Moshalasi, Lagos end of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, as a commercial bus driver, trying to escape attack, rammed into him.

It was gathered that the incident occured after the driver ran into some protesters and tried to turn back toward Ota in Ogun State.

However, the protesters sighted him and ran after him. Witnesses said the driver put his vehicle in reverse to escape the protesters, but in the process rammed into the okada rider, who was said to be coming on high speed.

One of the witnesses, Akinola Toyin, said, “The driver was using the reverse gear to run away; he was on a high speed. The okada rider was part of us (protesters); he was playing stunt with his okada. He did not see the bus on time. There was a collision between the bus and the okada.

“The rider was thrown off the okada; I think he hit his head on the expressway.”

It was learnt that the bus driver escaped, while the okada rider was later taken to an undisclosed hospital.

Also, an unidentified man was feared killed by policemen at the Obalende area of Lagos during the fuel hike protest.

It was learnt that prior to the killing, hoodlums had been looting and vandalising shops, cars and buildings.

A witness, Shade, said, “Policemen came to the area throwing teargas canisters and shooting to disperse the crowd. In the process, one of them what shot.”

Similarly, another set of protesters in Obalende attacked a police Inspector, who was said to have offended them.

Although the Inspector’s offence was not known, it was learnt he made some uncomplimentary comments, incurring the anger of the protesters. He was later saved from the mob by policemen, who were on patrol.
