Abdullahi laments rot in Nigerian sports

Minister of Sports Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi
Sports Minister, Bolaji Abdullahi, on Monday lamented the rot in the sports sector, blaming it on the state of management of the industry.
Making his presentation at the public hearing by the Senate Sports Committee, Abdullahi said the outcome of Nigeria’s participation in competitions were inevitable because of the inherent weaknesses in sports administration.
Abdullahi said, “I have come to the conclusion since I came into office that the results we are getting were inevitable because the systems running sports are weak and can’t produce good results.
“There is also the problem of management of sports in the country. Everybody is in a battle across mine fields. The conflict is not in the open, but it is happening within the institutions and gradually eating deep and crippling the entire system.”

The minister said there was need to streamline sports administration using the instrument of legislation so that officials could know their responsibilities in relation to the relevant supervising authorities.
The minister also lamented the poor preparations for the London 2012 Olympic Games, saying that there had been no funds as the budget was still not completed.
He said, “We are preparing to participate in the Olympics this July but there is no funds. We have been going out to different sources to get funds.”
He recommended that since the Olympics was held every four years, the country needed to budget for the Olympics yearly.
