Arsenal’s Marketing Director, Angus Kinnear, is thrilled at the huge followership the Gunners enjoy in Nigeria.
The London club host an annual
pre-season tournament at the Emirates Stadium, but they opted to
postpone the event for a year because of the 2012 London Olympics.
As part of their preparation for the
2012/13 season, the club decided to connect with their huge fan base in
Africa, by visiting the continent starting with Nigeria.
The English Premier League side
officials are in the country to inspect facilities for the tour,
scheduled for July 23 to August 5.
“It won’t be out of place to say Nigeria
may have more Arsenal fans than anywhere else in the world,” Kinnear
said at a press conference in Lagos on Tuesday.
“I haven’t seen a group of people as
passionate as this. To be globally competitive, we need to engage our
supporters worldwide and that’s what we are doing with this trip.
“It would be a fantastic experience for
the team (Arsenal) and fans in Nigeria and when we leave, we would
hopefully want to come back.
“It’s been a lovely time here; the
energy level is absolutely unbelievable. We are still inspecting
potential facilities in different states and the fans are excited about
the tour.
