The
Presidency has directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission
and a committee headed by the Attorney-General of the Federation, Mr.
Mohammed Adoke, to probe the sale of NECOM House to the West African
Aluminium Products Plc, The PUNCH has learnt.
WAAP Plc is owned by Chief Alani Bankole, father of a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Dimeji Bankole.
The PUNCH had on April 6,
2011, broken the news of the sale of one of the nation’s skyscrapers to
the company at N4bn in controversial circumstances.
An impeccable Presidency source
confirmed on Thursday, in Abuja, that the National Council on
Privatisation, chaired by Vice-President, Namadi Sambo, has referred the
matter to the EFCC and constituted a committed headed by Adoke to
investigate the matter.
The source said, “The matter has not
been swept under the carpet. The Attorney-General of the Federation is
heading an investigative committee constituted by the NCP on the
matter.
“I don’t know how far the committee has
gone in its work but what I know is that the report has not been
discussed by the council.
“It is when the council takes the report
of the committee that its recommendations will be made public. The
matter had also been referred to the EFCC for investigation.”
The committee constituted by the NCP,
the source said, was superior to the one that had been constituted by
the Bureau of Public Enterprises.
“This can be seen from the fact that it
is headed by the Attorney General of the Federation. That makes its
report superior to the earlier one,” the source added.
