Salami: Civil society groups plan mass action

Suspended President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Ayo Salami
Civil Society groups have announced plans for street protests in a bid to compel President Goodluck Jonathan to implement the recommendation of the National Judicial Council for the reinstatement of Justice Ayo Salami as the President of the Appeal Court.
The leaders of these groups who spoke to SUNDAY PUNCH said they had started mobilising people and would soon begin the protest.
The NJC had on May 10 recommended Salami’s reinstatement after a nine-month impasse.
However, the presidency has yet to implement the recommendation and this has elicited condemnations from some Nigerians.
The National Coordinator, Committee for Democracy and Right of the People, Mr. Amitolu Shittu, said leaders of civil society groups and other stakeholders met last Thursday and resolved to go on protest.
Shittu said several civil society groups were already mobilising for the protest which he said would start soon on an undisclosed date.
“Definitely, we are going to protest on the streets and force this government to respect the voice of the people. Before President Goodluck Jonathan was allowed to take over from former President Umar Yar’Adua, it was civil society groups that mobilised Nigerians and we protested on the streets until the rule of law was followed and Jonathan became president.
