Eagles to get special grant for Confederations Cup

The Nigeria Football Federation members have heaved a big sigh of relief as the success of the Super Eagles at the Africa Cup of Nations is opening more doors for opportunities for the federation. The Punch has learnt on authority that the Federal Government has, in principle, approved a special grant for the team to prosecute the FIFA Confederations Cup holding in Brazil in June.
A senior government official who is very familiar with the development told our correspondent on Monday that while the federation would have to seek other ways of funding their different international engagements through the year, there is a strong guarantee for the FIFA event.
He said, “The truth is that nobody really thought of winning the cup and then playing in the Confederations Cup but then things changed with winning the African Cup. Now, the Presidency is satisfied with the progress the team have made over time given the low level the country had dropped to.
“As a way of encouragement, a grant will be given to the NFF outside the original budget submitted. It is believed that they should settle most of their challenges as they now have a very marketable team in the Eagles as African champions.”
