Police Games to boost police-military relationship

Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar
The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar has assured that the Police Games will not only provide a platform for the police, the military and other security agencies to showcase their sporting prowess but it will also be an avenue for further strengthening the relationship amongst these agencies. The tournament in its 10th edition is scheduled for Port Harcourt from March 3 to 9.

While justifying the decision of the Force Sports Planning Committee to invite the military and other law enforcement agencies to the police sporting fiesta, the IGP noted that the police and the military share a common sporting history dating back to the pre-independence era. He explained that special invitation had been extended to the Nigerian Army, the Nigerian Navy and the Nigerian Air Force. Also expected in Port Harcourt for the Games are the Nigeria Customs Services, the Nigerian Prisons Service, the Nigerian Immigration Service, the Federal Fire Service, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps and the Federal Road Safety Commission.
These guests will be competing in polo, tug-of-war and 4x100m relays including the newly introduced mixed-relay race which is an innovative relay involving both men and women competing alongside each other in a single team. These events, though non-scoring, are billed to be part of the events in the opening and closing ceremonies. While the tug-of-war teams of the Nigerian Army, the Nigerian Navy, the Nigerian Air Force and that of the Nigeria Police Force will slug it out in the opening ceremonies, the relay teams from all the invited security agencies will get the tracks burning at the Port Harcourt Liberation Stadium, on March 9 to light up the closing events.
The Police Games has contributed very immensely to Nigeria’s sporting glory, discovering prominent athletes like Chioma Ajunwa, late Sunday Bada, Samuel Peters, among others.
