NBTS asks FG to recognise blood donors

The National Blood Transfusion Service has called on the Federal Government and other well-meaning Nigerians to recognise the contribution of blood donors toward saving the lives of Nigerians through blood donation.
Head, NBTS Donor Care,
Mrs Helen Goyo, made this appeal in an interview with The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Thursday.
NAN reports that the service commenced the activities commemorating the celebration of the 2012 World Blood Donor Day on June 14 from June 11.
“These donors voluntarily donate their blood to help save lives in the country.
“So if you cannot donate blood you can help support the government in appreciating these unsung heroes, who have saved lives by contributing donor items not necessarily monetary,” she said.
Goyo told NAN that there was no monetary attachment to blood donation, which was why it was voluntary.
She, however, said that the donors were only given donor appreciation items like face caps, T-shirts, ball pens, writing pads and other gift items.
“When the donor comes, we do a mini-medical checkup, the blood pressure, hemoglobin level and the weight.
“After successfully donating blood, we give them water and a malt drink, to help replace the fluid that has been lost.
“If it so happens that they have not eaten before the stipulated four hours before coming to donate blood, we give them food to eat before they donate blood.”
NAN spoke to one of the blood donors, Mr. Nathan John, 30, who donated blood for the 31st time in eight years.
