Team Nigeria athletes were among the
thousands of athletes that flew into London via the Heathrow Airport on
Monday as the Olympic Village opened up formally for the London 2012
Games. The combined athletes from the various countries and Olympics
visitors descended on London in the first wave of arrivals for the
Games, bumping up traffic through the capital’s busy Heathrow airport
and the major roads at record levels.
The first priority “Games Lane” went into
operation on the M4 motorway leading from Heathrow, designed to allow
athletes and officials to travel to their destinations without becoming
snarled up in London traffic.
The Nigeria Olympic Committee confirmedon
Monday that the first set of Nigerian representatives made up of
weightlifting, wrestling, table tennis and canoeing athletes arrived in
the city from their base in Germany for the event. Even though the
national basketball team members had arrived in the city in stages since
they got the ticket from the tournament in Caracas, Venezuela, they are
part of the delegation of Team Nigeria expected to move into the Games
Village on Tuesday.
