Inspector-General
of Police, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar, has directed senior officers in Benue
and Plateau states to device new security strategies to tackle the
perennial crisis in Jos.
Abubakar gave the directive in Abuja on Wednesday during a meeting with senior police officers.
He directed the Assistant
Inspector-General of Police Zone 4, Mr. Mike Zuokumor, and the Plateau
State Commissioner of Police, Mr Emmanuel Ayeni, to work out and submit
the strategies to him on August 14.
Abubakar said, “Internal security is our
core mandate. We must utilse our close affinity with local communities
and stakeholders to intervene meaningfully in conflicts and restore
calm to troubled areas of the country.
“The AIG and the commissioner should
immediately initiate efforts targeted at restructuring and evolving
effective security strategies to address the security challenges in
Plateau.
“You must let me know before the close of work on August 14 what new things we must do to restore permanent calm to Plateau.”
The IG said the strategies must show
practical and realistic solutions as well as specific and holistic
designs on short, medium and long term solutions.
According to him, the Jos crisis is a problem that must be solved.
