Mr Dipo Odujinrin, the new state Chairman of the party, said at the inauguration in Abeokuta that the reception was deserved honour for the elder statesman.
He described the programme as “a welcome-back-home reception for a worthy ambassador of the state.’’
Odujinrin dismissed insinuations that the planned reception was belated, saying nothing meaningful could have been done due to the crisis that rocked the party in the state.
“A new executive has just been elected to reposition the party after several months of differences that factionalised the party in our state,” he said.
Obasanjo, who voluntarily retired from the position, said it was to enable him devote more time to international engagements in order to attract more investment to Africa.
Odujinrin said the reception was the least the party could do for the Nigerian hero who had continuously fought for the unity of the country.
The chairman also recalled that it was during Obasanjo’s tenure as BOT Chairman of PDP that the party recorded overwhelming victory in the 2007 general elections.
Odujinrin, who went down memory lane to chronicle the achievements of Obasanjo, said it was a rare privilege to celebrate living legends. (NAN)
