Abducted Catholic priest regains freedom

A catholic priest, Reverend Father Sylvester Chukwurah who was kidnapped two weeks ago by unknown gunmen has regained his freedom at the weekend following a rescue operation mounted by operatives of the Edo State Command of the State Security Service (SSS)
Reverend Father Chukwurah regained his freedom on Friday after the operatives had stormed a suspected hideout of the kidnappers and arrested a member of the five –man gang that abducted the priest. The other four reportedly jumped into a nearby river and escaped.
The arrested suspect who identified himself as Alex Currency, 29, and claimed to be of Delta State origin reportedly told the SSS that he wanted to use his own share of the N12million ransom demanded for the release of Father Chukwurah to buy a car like their ring leader Sunday Egbesu, whom he stated owned two cars from money made from the kidnapping business.
Reverend Father Chukwurah, the parish priest of Saint Bernard’s Catholic Church, Eguaholor in Uhunmwode local government area of Edo State, was said to have been chained to a bench and fed with gala and water daily by his abductors
The SSS said they recovered one pump action gun and another cut-to size gun, both fully loaded from the kidnappers.
