Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and other
unions in Plateau State have called off the strike embarked upon to
press for the implementation of the new minimum wage and other
labour-related issues.
The NLC, NUT, health workers, including resident doctors, academic
and non-academic staff of the state tertiary institutions had been on
strike over the non-implementation of the national minimum wage.
Nigerian Tribune learnt that the hard-line postures of both the
government and the organised labour prolonged the strike, forcing some
of the eminent citizens of the state to intervene.
Addressing the newsmen on the agreement reached and signed with the
state government, the state chairman of NLC, Comrade Jibril Kamga
Bancir, said the government had agreed to implement the national minimum
wage to all its workers.
According to him, the government had also agreed to raise its monthly
wage bill within a basket allocation of N1.7 billion, adding that the
parties involved would work out salary the structures for implementation
within the financial limit stipulated.
Comrade Bancir said the demand made by the organised labour on salary
arrears and taxes would be forwarded to the government for
consideration, adding that it was also agreed that no worker would be
victimised in any manner by reason of having participated in the strike.
The State Commissioner of Information and Communication, Mr. Yiljap
Abraham who spoke on behalf of the State Government said the agreement
was signed with mutual understanding from both sides of the negotiating
teams and in the interest of the state.
