PDP govs back suit against Tukur, others

pdp tukur
Some governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party have reportedly thrown their weight behind three members seeking to compel the party to conduct a fresh national convention to elect its officers.
Our correspondents learnt in Abuja on Thursday that the governors had started mobilising to ensure the success of the suit, as a means of pushing the Alhaji Bamanga Tukur-led executive out of office.
Three members – Abba Yale, Alhaji Yahaya Aruwa Sule and Bashir Maidugu – are asking an Abuja High Court to compel the party to conduct a fresh convention to elect its national officials.
The suit was filed on March 27, 2013, a day before the Independent National Electoral Commission made public a report in which it voided the election of 12 members of the PDP National Working Committee.

Solomon Akiyesi and Bigamy in Nigeria

Solomon and Lilian Akiyesi (First wedding)
I know polygamy is part of the traditional culture in the south, and part of the religious culture in the north of Nigeria, but I thought Bigamy was a crime? So some men who married their first wives by customary marriage could go ahead to take another woman to a court or church for a legally registered marriage, or vice versa. But trying to marry two women through the church sounds a bit risky.

FG Vows “Action” Over Attacks On Nigerians In Bakassi

bakassi-penninsula

The Nigerian government has vowed an “appropriate action” to recent escalation of attacks by Cameroonian gendarmes, accused of killing at least a dozen Nigerians in Bakassi, Cross River State.

Reports suggest about 20 people have been killed and more than a thousand displaced in multiple attacks in the area within the past two weeks. A number of locals are also missing.
A recent onslaught occurred more than a week ago when Cameroonian soldiers opened fire on defenseless natives at Efut Obot Ikot, a settlement in the peninsula where they preferred to stay, the Chairman of Bakassi Local Government Area, Ekpo Bassey, said. He said a camp for displaced persons had swollen to 1, 800.
The Minister of Interior, Abba Moro, said Thursday in Abuja, that the report on the attack was being studied by the government. Mr. Moro spoke after a meeting of the presidential committee on the plight of the Displaced Bakassi People.
“As it is now, as a good player on the international scene, Nigeria has subscribed to the Green Tree Agreement and on our own part as a country we will continue to abide by the provisions of the agreement,” Mr. Moro said.
“For one reason or the other, resulting from little skirmishes here and there, the Cameroonian gendarme has attacked some innocent Nigerians. That report is being presented to government and the Nigerian government will take appropriate action to redress the situation.”

The military authorities are expected to present a common report and recommendations to the panel set up under the watch of the national security adviser (NSA), Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd), last week where they would endorse amnesty for Boko Haram but insist on retaining soldiers on the streets of the volatile states.
President Goodluck Jonathan last week mandated the NSA to set up a panel to study the possibility or otherwise of granting amnesty to the Boko Haram sect whose members have been terrorising some states in the north.
At the meeting presided over by the president were  the NSA; the chief of defence staff, Admiral S. Ola Ibrahim; the chief of army staff, Lt. General Azubuike Ihejirika; the chief of air force, Air Marshal Alex Sabundu Badeh; the chief of the naval staff, Vice Admiral Dele Ezeoba; the inspector-general of police, Mr Mohammed Abubakar; the director-general of the State Security Service, Ekpenyong Ita;  the director, Military Intelligence (DMI), Brigadier-General Letam Wiwa; and the DG, Nigerian Intelligence Agency (NIA), Major General S.Y. Audu. Others were the ministers of state for defence Erelu Olusola Obada, interior Abba Moro and police affairs Caleb Olubolade.

Incredible – Malaria Kills 300,000 Children Yearly …The Prevention, The Cure

Despite the awareness about preventing malaria, it still remains the number one killer of children in Nigeria, but UNICEF, the government and ‘Roll Back Malaria’ body are of the belief that the death of thousands of children under five years old annually could be prevented by simple cost effective measures including consistent use of long-lasting insecticide treated mosquito nets by families and anti-malaria treatment for pregnant women.
Malaria remains a major health problem in Nigeria. An estimated 300,000 children die of the disease each year and up to 11% of maternal mortality is caused by it. It represents one in every four deaths of children and one in 10 deaths of pregnant women. It is further estimated that about half of the population of Nigeria adults suffer from at least one episode of malaria annually while children under five years suffer three or four episodes every year.

5 banks own 60% assets of Nigeria’s banking sector – The Banker

CBN governor, Sanusi

The top five Nigerian banks owned 60 percent of the banking sector assets in the country.  This was contained in a report released, Tuesday, by The Banker, a publication of Financial Times of London.
The top five banks, according to The Banker comprise Zenith Bank, Access Bank, First Bank, Guaranty Trust Bank and United Bank for Africa and owned about 60 percent of overall assets.
It said some foreign investors have suggested Nigeria will soon go the way of South Africa, where the four largest banks have an 85 percent market share.
For them, Nigeria’s mid-tier and small lenders will struggle to survive and several would be taken over by bigger rivals in the next few years”.
