The
House of Representatives Committee on Public Accounts resolved on
Wednesday to issue arrest warrants on the Chairman of the Independent
National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega; and the Chairman of
the National Population Commission, Mr. Festus Odumegwu, on Thursday
(today).
The committee said in Abuja on Wednesday that the two officials had
failed to honour five previous invitations to defend audit queries
raised on the operations of their agencies.
The queries were raised by the Office of the Auditor-General of the Federation, Mr. Samuel Ukura.
Chairman of the committee, Mr. Solomon Olamilekan, who disclosed the
decision of the committee after a meeting, said INEC’s queries covered
2003 to 2011.
For the NPC, queries were raised on its expenditure from 2003 to 2009.
According to him, the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Mohammed
Abubakar, will be required to bring Jega and Odumegwu before the
committee on Wednesday next week.
Olamilekan said, “It is the view of this committee that anyone who
occupies a public office must show due diligence and accountability.
“This House will demand this of them whether they like it or not.
