N.3m Church Money Turns To Mere Paper

Fear and confusion gripped residents of Hwolshe in Jos, when N300, 000 church collection suddenly turned to a bundle of papers as it was about to be deposited in the bank.
The money, which belonged to St. Mary’s Parish, Hwolshe in Jos South Local Government was handed to Miss Ifeoma Eze, the Church Secretary to be deposited in the bank before the mystery occurred.
Eze told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday that she had filled the teller at the main branch of Jos Zenith with the money wrapped in polythene but saw papers when she was about to give the cash to the cashier.
“The money was intact when I left home for the bank but on getting to the counter, I opened the polythene bag only to discover that it has turned to bundles of papers.
“I was so confused and scared; I started screaming and was oblivious of the attention I was attracting as bewildered customers tried to console me,” she told NAN.
She said that she was particularly confused because she was wondering how to relay the story to the Parish Priest who entrusted the money to her.
She said that she was still “too baffled and confused” to convey her shock, adding that it was difficult to imagine what had happened.
“It is a story I find difficulty in telling anyone because not many people can believe it,” she said.
Eze said that she could not fathom what could have happened but explained that she took the money home on Sunday and changed the smaller denominations into bigger ones to ease the deposit processes in the bank.

LAWAN Vs Otedola: House dismisses broadcast of audio records

The House of Representatives has dismissed the broadcast of purported audio records of how Mr Farouk Lawan allegedly collected $620,000 bribe from Mr Femi Otedola, as part of attempts to distract the lower chamber of the National Assembly from its commitment to ensure that the report of its ad-hoc committe on petroleum subsidy is implemented.
This assertion was made by the Chairman of the House Committee on Media, Zakari Mohammed, while briefing newsmen on the activities of the House during the week.
On what transpired between Otedola and members of the House Committee on Ethics and Privileges, Tuesday, Mohammed said the House had no problem with the oil mogul.
Said he: ”We are not trying Otedola, he was only invited as a witness in a case of alleged misconduct against our colleague.”
Throwing light on why the committee decided to hold its investigative hearing on the bribe saga in camera, Mohammed said it wasn’t only the Houses’s Committee that observed such rules, citing the orderly room trial and court martial normally undergone by policemen and military personnel involved in misconduct as examples.
Said he: ”Even the Ethics Committee of the Nigeria Bar Association, NBA, sits in camera when hearing cases of misconduct involving lawyers,” and urged relevant law enforcement agencies to ensure that the report of the ad-hoc committee was fully implemented, acknowledging that it had been partly implemented.
He denied that the House was trying to cover up the case involving Lawan, adding that “he was on his own.”
He explained why Zenon Petroleum and Gas Ltd.owned by Otedola had to be relisted among companies indicted by the House, adding that it was because of the circumstances surrounding its initial delisting.
He further stated that what was happening was that the House was paying the price for some of the decisions it took on behalf of the Nigerian people.

Police murdered my husband and labelled him an armed robber to cover it up – widow cries out

EVERYONE who knew Mrs. Munirat Ojo Ismail, would observe that she is currently a shadow of her old vibrant self. The reason is not far fetched as she has been turned into a young widow at 24, following the alleged killing of her husband under questionable manner by policemen attached to Kogi State command.
The incident which has not only shattered Mrs. Ojo but also saddled her with the responsibility of catering for her two children Mubarak (3) and Mufidat (6 months old), alone, is to say the least, unbearable for the lactating mother.
Her 25-year-old husband, Ojo Ismail Usman, a Diploma certificate holder from the Kaduna State Polytechnic, was reportedly arrested by policemen attached to Kogi State on February 5, 2012, in Lokoja and detained, only to be reported dead 18 days later.
Robbery suspect
Although Police sources in Kogi alleged that the late Ismail, who hailed from Ahache in Okene Local government area of the state was a robbery suspect, the widow denied the claim, calling on the police to show proof. After waiting for four months without any reasonable explanation over the death of her husband, the widow has consequently petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar, to investigate the matter with a view to ensuring that justice was done.

2yr old boy 'plays' on 100ft balcony ledge for over five minutes

A toddler came within inches of plummeting 100 feet to his death after climbing on to a high-rise flat balcony as his mother slept inside.

Dramatic footage showed the two-year-old crawling along, and sitting on, the balcony's ledge eight storeys up, while horrified passers-by looked on.

One terrified onlooker was so concerned that she filmed the boy nonchalantly peering down and dangling his legs over the drop.

Neighbour Debbie Green said: 'I was talking to my son's girlfriend on our front door when she looked up behind me and said: 'there's a baby up there on the balcony.'
'I turned round and saw the kid up there just playing on the balcony with no protection - I thought he was going to fall, I was sure he was going to die.
'The police arrived after about six minutes but it felt like hours - I had to go back in the house to try and calm down because I couldn't watch.

'I have never felt so scared in all my life, it was horrendous.
'I couldn't believe someone would let their child do that.

'But they have a chair on the balcony that he was able to use to climb up onto the ledge.'

Debbie's husband John, added: 'After the police went round the father just calmly walked onto the balcony and moved the chair They didn't seem that phased by it all.

'I'm amazed the kid was able to keep his balance up there.

'One of our neighbours said he wanted to go and do something, but we realised if he had then the child might have leant to look at us and fallen - so we waited for the police to come.

'There are loads of people who would like to have kids and then there are these people who let their children play on a balcony and ignore them.

'He's obviously been up there several times before because he was incredibly careful to climb down.'

John said he felt like he was about to film a child's death.

Officers arrived at the block of flats in Wyken, in Coventry, seven minutes later to find the mother and a man asleep inside.
They said she claimed the boy was safe because of the delicate pigeon netting over the balcony.

When approached, the mother claimed she had in fact been in the kitchen, not asleep, while the boy played outside.

She said the doors onto the veranda don't shut properly allowing the boy easy access to the outside world.

Claiming she was 'shocked' when police told her what her son had been doing, she told The Sun: 'I won’t let him out of my sight now. I’d like to thank the neighbours over the way who saw him'

Police are taking no further action.

Don Jazzy shares money on Twitter

PUNCH — Mo Hits Records may have split but talented producer, Michael ‘Don Jazzy’ Ajereh, still knows how to create a buzz on Twitter. On Tuesday, he caused mother luck to shine on some of his followers when he asked for their account details after they complained that they were broke. A few hours later, five lucky fans who had received deposit alerts tweeted back at him in appreciation.
One of the beneficiaries, identified as Mr. Adeyemi, claimed that the star producer sent N100, 000 to him. Another fan, @tweetlawunmi, expressed her gratitude in a tweet saying, “Thank You. Thank you! Thank You! God bless you abundantly. The gesture has spurred frenzy on Twitter, as numerous persons have been asking Jazzy for money, giving various reasons.
Although some may see this as a publicity drama, Jazzy says he is only trying to put smiles on the faces of his fans.
He says, “I do not want this to be perceived as a public relations stunt. I prefer to do my things in a quiet manner. I have sent money before but because this was on timeline it got public. It just so happened that some of them requested for money. It was on the spur of the moment and not planned at all. Many others have asked for advice, record deals and many different things, I just try and do the little I can.”
In the last few years, Don Jazzy has wormed his way into the hearts of many fans, giving out recharge cards and shopping vouchers. Such gestures may be responsible for his having almost 300,000 followers. This makes him the Nigerian celebrity with the highest number of Twitter fans, more than Asa, Genevieve, Dbanj and Wizkid. But he hints that he is not stopping yet as he already has a few account details in his Twitter message box.

Do you have a security or corruption problem involving the Nigeria Police Force?
Then call the Inspector-General himself, Mohammadu Dahiru Abubakar, on 08059666666. That’s right: it is his personal mobile phone number.
In an unprecedented public relations move, Mr. Abubakar published the number this afternoon in Kaduna, charging all Nigerians who have security challenges to reach him directly, and also to report any policeman or officer found engaging in corrupt practices and abnormalities.
The IG was speaking at Force Headquarters in the city after inspecting some weapons recovered by his men from suspected rioters and bombers.
He warned that the Nigeria Police must change based on reforms he is spearheading towards changing its battered image.
The IG also blasted the Nigerian elite, alleging that some of them induce police officers to play their games by freeing hardened criminals who ought to be prosecuted.

Good luck to you, President Jonathan wishes athletes

President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday wished Nigeria’s team good luck and mandated them to go to the Olympic Games in London and scoop medals.
Speaking during the handover ceremony of the team at the Sheraton Hotel in Lagos, President Jonathan said that the London Games provide the best chance for the athletes to raise their profile.
Recalling that Nigeria’s best outing at the Olympics was at the 1996 Games in Atlanta, President Jonathan, who was represented at the event by the Minister of Sports and Chairman, National Sports Commission (NSC), Bolaji Abdulahi, said that it was time for Nigeria to return to winning ways, beginning from London.
“For how long will our best continue to remain in our past is the big question on my mind and that is the challenge before you as you go for the Games in London. We should start asking what strategic policies are we putting in place to make people work and win”, said President Jonathan through Bolaji.
He said that the undying Nigerian spirit was going to propel athletes to greater heights in London.
“We have continued to surpass all expectations because we find strength in those things that we do not have and that is the Nigerian spirit. That is what you are taking to London. We are a nation of great athletes, who I believe can win medals in London.
“We must start now to build systems that can produce medalists, rather than athletes who can chase medals.. We expect you to make us proud but we don’t want medals that are tainted by drugs. Do not go near drugs. We can only build on what we have achieved so far”.

Arsenal postpone pre-season game in Nigeria

Arsenal Football Club has announced it is reluctantly postponing its proposed trip to Nigeria this summer. The Club has taken the decision as a result of complexities linked to the planned game against Nigeria on Saturday, August 5 in Abuja.

Arsenal marketing director Angus Kinnear said: "Bringing a top-level club to an international market is always complicated and logistically challenging. With the proposed match in Nigeria planned for early August, we could not get comfortable on everything needed to satisfy our requirements, so we have reluctantly taken the decision to postpone the team’s visit."

Kinnear continued: “We have a huge and loyal following in Africa, and we are sorry that the team will not be visiting this summer. However, we have a long-term commitment to Nigeria and we are already making plans for a visit next summer.

"In addition, we also have some exciting forthcoming activities planned with our commercial partners in Nigeria - Emirates, Airtel and Malta Guinness, which will kick off in the next few weeks.”

Emirates are the presenting partner of the Arsenal 2012 Tour and Boutros Boutros, divisional senior vice-president of corporate communications said: “Emirates shares Arsenal’s disappointment that the team’s visit to Nigeria has been postponed. We look forward to working with Arsenal to bring the Club closer to its loyal Nigerian fans through new initiatives over the coming months.”

All further updates on Arsenal’s future activities in Nigeria will be communicated on www.Arsenal.com.

Jonathan okays Dasuki, Boko Haram peace talks

PUNCH — President Goodluck Jonathan has given the new National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.), the go-ahead to commence dialogue with members of the violent Islamic sect, Boko Haram.
The NSA has also got the President’s backing on the steps he has so far taken to end the violence the sect unleashed on some states in the north and the Federal Capital Territory.
Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Reuben Abati, told The PUNCH exclusively on Thursday in Abuja that Jonathan was favourably disposed to all lawful steps that might be taken by the new NSA to bring about peace in the country.
Following his appointment as a replacement for the ex-NSA, Gen. Andrew Azazi (retd.), Dasuki has been visiting the troubled states and holding talks with leaders in the affected areas.
He was on Thursday quoted as saying that he had obtained the contact details of some leaders of the sect with the aim of reaching out to them.
In the interview with one of our correspondents, Abati said, “The man (Dasuki) is only doing the job given him by the President. His assignment is to restore peace to the country. The President will support whatever lawful steps he may be taking to perform his assignment.
“By establishing contact with members of the sect and holding talks with leaders of the troubled areas, the NSA is only doing his job.”
On whether the steps being taken by Dasuki were indications that the Federal Government was ready to enter into dialogue with the sect, Abati said, “The position of President Jonathan is clear on this issue.
“He has said it many times that once members of the sect come out openly, his government will talk with them.
“That of course does not mean that the government will support or encourage impunity.
“He made it clear during a recent visit of the Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Mrs. Fatou Bensounda, that his administration would not condone impunity.
“The President promised Bensounda that his administration would support the ICC in its efforts to check impunity.”

Reps query Okonjo-Iweala, Otunla, Okogwu over poor implementation of Budget 2012

THE House of Representatives, yesterday, queried the Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala; Accountant General of the Federation, Mr Jonah Otunla and Director-General of the Budget Office, Dr Bright Okogwu, over the snail-like pace of implementation of the 2012 budget.
The Reps also accused the Federal Government of discrimination and the selective nature of releases to Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs, which had largely affected implementation.
Also yesterday, the Minister of Finance suggested that there was need for Nigeria to have at least $10 billion on its Excess Crude Account as most countries in Africa now have crude.
Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation, Mr John Enoh, in his address at the meeting with relevant stakeholders, expressed concern on the low level of implementation of the budget, adding that most of the MDAs complained that funds were not released at at appropriate time.
Enoh said: “If money is not released and some of these ministries are complaining to our committees that are going on oversight, we need to see how we could strengthen the implementation. We like to have an updated documents to show that over N400 billion had been released.”
The chairman said the Ministry of Niger Delta got 50 per cent of its allocation but the question is: what can be responsible for that? One is worried because reports get to us from our standing committee that there were so many on-going projects that these ministries and parastatals can utilise their funds on.
He said: “I can tell you that Ministry of Water Resources got an allocation of N70 billion but got just about N10 billion, likewise the Ministry of Land and Housing, of N42 billion allocated to it, got N6 billion.”

Angelina Jolie Admits That She Doesn't Get Much Sleep With Brad Pitt

The Oscar-winning actress is often seen with her children, Maddox, 11, Pax, eight, Zahara, seven, Shiloh, six, and three-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne along with Brad as they globe-trot around the world but Angelina reveals that she doesn't get a lot of time on her own.

UN forum backs rights to free online expression

The United Nations Human Rights Council on Thursday said people had a right to freedom of expression on the Internet and called on all states to protect it.
In speeches, both China and Cuba voiced reservations, but joined the consensus at the 47-member state UN Human Rights Council, which adopted the landmark resolution presented by Sweden.
“This outcome is momentous for the Human Rights Council,” said Eileen Donahoe, ambassador for Washington which co-sponsored the motion with Brazil and Tunisia.
“It is the first ever UN resolution affirming that human rights in the digital realm must be protected and promoted to the same extent and with the same commitment as human rights in the physical world,” she said.
China’s envoy backed the motion but said people also needed to be protected from harmful websites.
“We believe that the free flow of information on the Internet and the safe flow of information on the Internet are mutually dependent,” Xia Jingge told the assembly.
“As the Internet develops rapidly, online gambling, pornography, violence, fraud and hacking are increasing its threat to the legal rights of society and the public,” he added.

Pilots, faulty equipment caused 2009 Air France crash – Report

Air France Aircraft
Technical failure and human error led to the loss of an Air France flight over the Atlantic in June 2009 and the deaths of 228 people, according to the final report into the crash.
The report by France’s aviation authority, the BEA, says the crew did not react correctly after the Airbus A330 had technical failures, the BBC reported.
It blames the Airbus A330′s ergonomics as well as inappropriate pilot action.
The jet disappeared from radars while en route to Paris from Rio de Janeiro.
It took nearly two years for the flight recorders to be found.
The report makes 25 new safety recommendations on top of the 25 called for in a preliminary report released last year by the BEA.
That report also said the pilots did not follow the proper procedures after the aircraft’s speed sensors – called Pitot tubes – failed after the plane encountered turbulence two hours after take-off.
The plane stalled and lost altitude and the captain did not retake control of the plane after taking a rest.

Kuramo Beach is closed

The Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Victoria Island, in statement said “We are closing down the beach for one week; a team of security agents will continue to raid the beach to get rid of criminals.”
A combined team of officers of the police, Army, Immigration and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) had reportedly raided the beach last week and arrested some miscrants in the area.
The DPO in the statement further said that the beach management and the local government where the resort is located had been included in the team of task force to clear the beach of squatters.
“We are raiding all the cabins on the beach. Anyone who wants to work in the cabins must be known by the security agents.

India to give free drugs to hundreds of millions

From city hospitals to tiny rural clinics, India’s public doctors will soon be able to prescribe free generic drugs to all comers, vastly expanding access to medicine in a country where public spending on health was just $4.50 per person last year.
The plan was quietly adopted last year but not publicized. Initial funding has been allocated in recent weeks, officials said.
Under the plan, doctors will be limited to a generics-only drug list and face punishment for prescribing branded medicines, a major disadvantage for pharmaceutical giants in one of the world’s fastest-growing drug markets.
“Without a doubt, it is a considerable blow to an already beleaguered industry, recently the subject of several disadvantageous decisions in India,” said KPMG partner Chris Stirling, who is European head of Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals.
“Pharmaceutical firms will likely rethink their emerging markets strategies carefully to take account of this development, and any similar copycat moves across other geographies,” he added.

Dasuki meets Boko Haram leaders soon

Dasuki
The new National Security Adviser (NSA) retired Col. Sambo Dasuki assured yesterday that he will soon meet with Boko Haram leaders for possible dialogue with the group, saying he already had their contacts.
Dasuki, who spoke in Jos during a meeting with stakeholders in Plateau, said he was planning to meet with the group on the need for it to cease fire and embrace dialogue as soon as possible.

“I was in Yobe and Borno States last week and I have got the telephone numbers and contacts of key Boko Haram members and I will meet with them. I saw the dangerous effect of Boko Haram in these states and what I saw was pathetic. But I have the mandate to put heads together with religious and traditional leaders as well as the state governments to ensure an immediate ceasefire,” Dasuki said.

5 ways to perfect your hair for the ‘occasion’

Your hair is your crowning glory. Look after it and it will shine for all the world to see. You don’t always need expensive treatments or visits to a hair salon to manage your hair professionally. There’s so much you can do yourself.
1. For shiny, healthy hair, think first of your body’s intake. Your hair is really just a reflection of what you are inside. A good balanced, nutritious and healthy diet will do more to make your hair shine than any shampoo or conditioner. Also drink eight to ten glasses of water a day; hair is 25% water, so don’t let yours go thirsty!
2. Dry your hair after washing in the ambient temperature of your room. Use an absorbent towel to soak up the excess moisture, but don’t rub hard. If possible, don’t use blow-dryers, flat irons, curling irons or hot rollers. Artificial heat will leave your hair brittle and damaged in time. Be natural whenever you can. If you can’t, use heat protectants to offset some of the damage.
3. Prevent unnecessary hair damage by using the right kind of hairbrush. Only comb wet hair with a wide-tooth comb, combing from end to root, but avoiding touching the root. Detangling wet hair with a hard steel comb can create a lot of damage, so don’t!
4. Remove split ends like this: take small sections of your hair and carefully twist them in a gentle downward motion. The split ends will stick out. Using sharp scissors, carefully cut into the twisted section, but not right through, to remove the damaged cuticles and leave a natural layered look. Cut roughly the same amount from each twist to balance the effect.
5. Hair loss can be slowed, or even reversed by applying a few simple tips, though they probably won’t cure an underlying condition. Biotin can help to regenerate hair follicles: blend bananas with honey, yoghurt and low-fat milk, and drink it daily. Supplements such as Vitamin B6, zinc and saw palmetto will help too, but eliminating stress and getting plenty of sleep may work just as well.
We are all obsessed with our hair, whether we are 9 or 90, male or female. Look after yourself first and foremost, and your hair will reflect that care and attention.

At last, the National Youth Service Corps has bowed to pressure and rescinded the decision to post 14,850 corps members to troubled northern states.
It has directed the affected corps members to report at the NYSC headquarters for redeployment to states considered safe.
A statement by the Director-General of the NYSC, Brig.-General Nnamdi Okore-Affia, in Abuja on Wednesday, directed corps members posted to Bauchi, Gombe, Plateau, Kano and Kaduna states to immediately report to the NYSC headquarters for redeployment.
This came barely 24 hours after an earlier insistence by the NYSC that corps members posted to the affected areas must first report to camp before requests for redeployment could be considered.
Okore-Affia has also directed all those deployed in Yobe and Borno states to report to new orientation camps in Nasarawa and Benue states respectively.
The statement reads, “This is to inform all prospective corps members deployed to Yobe and Borno states for the 2012 Batch ‘B’ Orientation Course to note the following:

The statement is silent on the fate of those who have already reported in camp in compliance with the earlier directive.

DON’T TOLERATE MOCKERS

Download Open Heavens Daily Devotional 2012 for iPhone, iPad, Android, Blackberry, JAVA-enabled Pho
MEMORIZE: “Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God” (1 Sam 17:36).

READ: 1 Samuel 17: 1-11

When an ex-champion regains his crown, the experience goes beyond joy; it is glory! Can you imagine how young David felt after bringing down Goliath who terrorized the nation of Israel for 40 days? It was glory! Just as God used David to bring down Goliath, so also will the Lord use you to bring down every cause of shame and reproach in your life, family, community, church and nation. If you can cooperate with the Lord of hosts, there is no giant you cannot floor.

Now, if you were an ex-champion, how can you recover your lost crown? And after recovering it, what can you do to retain it? There are three things you must do. First, stop tolerating mockers. Anything that is asking you, ‘Where is your God?’ is a mocker. Sickness, poverty, barrenness, and stagnancy, are mockers; they seek to steal the testimony of God from your life. They must not be tolerated. Any mocker you tolerate is in no hurry to leave. In 1 Samuel 17, Goliath continued to torment the nation of Israel for 40 days because they could tolerate him. The day David rose to challenge that mocker, the latter was on his way out. If David had not risen, the Israelites would have continued to undergo mental torture even for years. And if this situation had lingered, it would have become something permanent.

The reason many people are yet to be delivered from the mockers in their lives is because they tolerate them. They think they can cope with the situation since it has not gotten to its extreme level. They say, ‘I am managing’ (speaking of poverty), ‘I am sick but not totally down’. Some even think it is a virtue to endure pain, sorrow, barrenness, sickness or lack. No! God does not want you to be patient with anything that challenges the reality of God in your life. Which mocker are you tolerating presently? Stamp it out today! Address that mocker and serve it an eviction order. Like David, stand up against every mocker. When you do, you will find they were not so strong after all.

Jonathan bans official delegation to London Olympics

President Goodluck Jonathan has banned official delegation to the 2012 Olympics in London.
Sports Minister, Bolaji Abdullahi, disclosed this on Wednesday at the end of the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan.
Abdullahi assured that there will be no room for jamboree which had been the usual practice in the past where government officials with little or nothing to do at sporting events are dispatched to attend thereby constituting nuisance in most cases and also end up distracting the athletes.
The unprecedented move by President Jonathan, according to the minister was aimed at cutting cost and gets the athletes focused.
He said: “This is to ensure that we have value for what are doing. Any governor or top government officials outside of the participating teams seen at the London Olympics will certainly not have travelled on federal government ticket.

33.5 Million Living With HIV — WHO

At least 33.6 million people globally have been diagnosed with HIV while an estimated 2.7 million others were newly infected with the virus out of which two million died in 2008, a World Health Organisation, WHO, record for 2008 has revealed.
The HIV virus usually grows into full blown Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, AIDS, of which no cure had been found.
According to the WHO report, youths who are sexually active, whose age range from 15-24 were found to be infected more than older people. Half of the youths make up the 33.5 million persons living with HIV virus in 2008.
The report added that Nigeria ranked third in the number of HIV infections in the world while the highest prevalence HIV/AIDS age group is between 15 and 24 years.
Similarly, in sub-Sahara Africa, there are 3.2 million young people living with HIV.
In an effort to reduce the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in Nigeria, two non-governmental organizations, NGOs, the Mike Okonkwo Educational Youth Initiative in collaboration with Journalist Against AIDS, JAAIDs, recently organised a campaign programme for youth at the mega Football Viewing Centre of the Federal College of Education, Akoka, Yaba, Lagos, southwest Nigeria.

Teenager released from Kirikiri after four years for phone theft

A Lagos High Court on Wednesday ordered the release of Blessing Effiong, a 19-year-old girl, who had spent nearly four years in Kirikiri Prison for alleged phone theft.
In the case titled People of Lagos State vs Blessing Effiong, the teenager, whose plea was taken for the first time, was charged with possessing suspected stolen property.
However, before the charge was read to her, prosecution lawyer, Mr. W.A Quadri, sought and got the court’s permission to amend the charge against the teenager.
The charge was changed from receiving stolen property to possessing suspected stolen property.
Before the new charge was read to Effiong, Quadri informed the court that both parties had entered into a plea bargain and sentence agreement.
Justice Christopher Balogun berated both the prosecution and defence counsel for not intimating the court of the development ahead of time. He, nonetheless, allowed the case to continue.
“So, there was an issue of plea bargain and you did not inform the court ahead of time? You should have brought this to the notice of the court long before now,” he said.
The charge reads in part, “Blessing Effiong on or about the months of July and August 2008 at Descon Hotel, Apapa Road, in the Lagos Judicial Division was found in possession of a Starcomms handset reasonably suspected to have been stolen and was unable to give satisfactory account of how she came by the same.

Nurse sacks husband for repeatedly infecting her with STDs

Divorce cases sometimes are so knotty that even the court has difficulty adjudicating. Such was the case when John Eze, a father of two fervently begged the court not to sever his seven-year-old marriage which his wife was bent on having dissolved by law. The embattled man swallowed his pride and was almost kneeling before his wife right inside the court begging her to withdraw her divorce suit against him.

However, his wife, Ebun Eze, a trained midwife working with a Specialist Hospital in Okokomaiko, filed for divorce on the grounds of her husband’s adultery. According to the embittered woman, who alleged she was the breadwinner of the family since her husband’s business collapsed, her husband not only turned adultery into a hobby but had continued to contract and infect her with different types of sexually transmitted diseases. Even after she’d treated him, he repeatedly came back with new infections.

The court heard from her: “At first it was staphylococcus. He bought some herbal concoctions to treat himself but it didn’t yield any result. Consequently I had to take it up from there with orthodox medications. Finally he got a clean system, I pleaded with him to stay away from other women in order to avoid a repeat of the infection. But my advice fell on deaf ears. Few months later, he contracted Gonorrhea. We battled that together too, because if I don’t treat him very well, he would certainly infect me with the disease.

Since then, it was just from one STD/STI to another. My health and well-being is at stake. He doesn’t contribute positively to my life and that of the children, instead he is bent on spreading his infections to everyone around him,” she argued.

When her husband took the stand, while he did not rebut her allegations, he gave a contrary account. He averred that his wife abandoned their matrimonial home three years ago, after which she sent him a text message informing him that her pastor gave her a serious warning to stay away from her husband or incur the wrath of God.

Oteh can attend some meetings despite her suspension-Okonjo Iweala

The Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has defended the attendance of former Director-General (DG) of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Ms Arunma Oteh, at Tuesday’s meeting of the Economic Management Team.
Briefing state house correspondents after the meeting Dr Iweala said that Ms Arunma’s suspension from office does not stop her from attending or participating in one or two meetings on the economy.
According to the Coordinating Minister of the economy, the suspended DG is yet to be indicted by the investigations and therefore can continue to contribute her ideas to meetings.
A mild drama ensued at the Presidential villa when the suspended DG attended the Economic Management Meeting presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan.
Ms Oteh was a member of the Economic Management Team by virtue of her former position as the DG SEC.
However, with her suspension, it is expected that she would cease to be a member and give way to the acting DG, Ibrahim Bello, to take over her membership.

SHOCKER!!! Rev. Chris Okotie’s Love Child Expose?

Until last Sunday when Reverend Chris Okotie, the debonair overseer of the Household of God Church, Oregun, Ikeja, Lagos got separated from Stephenie Henshaw, a widow, there had been speculations about whether or not he would consider remarrying.
This is on account of his divorce from Tina, his wife of over 17 years about five years ago and refusal to marry any woman who did not meet certain conditions and criteria he purportedly laid down. Nonetheless, that never stopped smitten women from trying to win his heart. So much that several of these single, divorced or widowed women in his church embarked on a battle royale to conquer his heart.
Even women who were not his church members were hot contenders for the rich and suave pastor’s heart. This position stirred endless speculations in the media as the Pastor was regularly reported to be considering marrying whoever became the superstar at each point in his life.
Among the women rumoured to have enjoyed more than a church member or filial relationship with Pastor Okotie was ex-Miss Nigeria, Vien Tetsola. So close were they that he was instrumental to the purchase of a Volkswagen Bug Tetsola was driving as well as her upkeep and other sundry bills.
The rumour mill went agog with tales of an impending marriage between them when he played a prominent role during Vien’s 30th birthday party held at the Sheraton Hotel, Lagos, a few years back. He even cut the cake with her. Soon after, talks about her making a wedding gown made the rounds with Vien confirming in an interview she granted a newspaper that indeed, she would be getting married soon. All of that talk soon faded when nothing of the sort materialized. The pastor moved on.

Reps order NYSC to cancel posting of Corp members to Troubled states

THE House of Representatives, yesterday, directed the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, to cancel all postings of corps members to states in the North East which are faced with security challenges.
This was sequel to the controversy that emanated from the posting of Batch B corps members, last Monday which resulted  in a protest by the corpers at the headquarters of the NYSC in Abuja. The affected corps members insisted that the authorities should redeploy them to safer areas in the country.
In its resolution on a motion moved by a member, Mr Peter Edeh, under matters of urgent public importance, the House also directed the NYSC to maintain the same  such stance until the security threats in the affected states had been satisfactorily addressed.
The House, however, asked corps members who opted to serve in the troubled states, to be allowed to do so.
Good move, I love this...hanhan(lolzz), the truth of the matter is that no NYSC official will allow their children to be posted to such areas, including the lady that was defending their action yesterday.
