Missing $20,000: FAAN releases CCTV footage

Murtala Muhammed Domestic Airport (MMA2), Lagos
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria on Sunday said it would assist the police in unraveling the mystery surrounding the alleged loss of $20,000 at the screening point of Terminal 1 of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, popularly known as MMA2, Lagos.
FAAN has also released the CCTV footage.
On May 9, 2012, Mr. Yakubu Dazhia, a passenger who was booked on the First Nation Airlines’ flight from Lagos to Abuja, claimed that he lost $20,000 at the security screening point of the MM2.
According to a statement by FAAN on Sunday, Dazhia claimed to have kept the money in his hand luggage at his hotel room before heading for the airport. He claimed to have discovered the loss of the said money when he tried to pick a complimentary card for a friend on board the flight.
Dazhia had, on arrival at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, reported the matter to the Chief Security Officer of FAAN at the airport.

On Sunday, however, FAAN, in the statement, said it released the close-circuit television footage of Dazhia’s movement while at MMA2 on May 9.
The airport agency said without prejudice to the ongoing investigation by the police, the claim of the passenger could not be established from its preliminary investigation and analysis of the CCTV footage of the event.
The statement signed by the Head, Public Affiars, FAAN, Mr. Akin Olukunle, said the CCTV analysis was done in the presence of NCAA officials and Dazhia himself.
According to FAAN, the CCTV footage showed that contrary to the claim of Dahzia that nobody accompanied him to the airport on May 9, 2012, he was sighted at 6.33 am at MMA2 Departure Hall wearing cream coloured agbada attire, accompanied by a man who wore black trousers and a white short sleeve shirt.
The man, who accompanied Dazhia, carried a laptop-sized bag, which he strapped on his shoulder.
FAAN said that a careful analysis of Dazhia and the man’s movement further showed that they were engaged in a conversation as they hurriedly moved towards the MMA2 escalator and at exactly six hours 33 minutes 25 seconds (6.33:25pm), Dazhia was seen on the CCTV footage giving something to the man that accompanied him.
