We never planned to humiliate Nigeria – US coach

The coach of the United States basketball team, Mike Krzyzewski, has denied insinuations that his team arrived at the Basketball Arena of the London 2012 Olympics determined to humiliate Nigeria for being “loud-mouthed.”
The soft-spoken manager told the world media after the game which saw Nigeria’s D’Tigers badly beaten by 156-73 that what happened to Nigeria could have happened to any other team, given the performance his players put up.
He said, “It is wrong for anyone to say that it was a game plan to embarrass Nigeria because of the interest the game generated since the draw was made.
“The result turned out that way because of the shooting percentage we had on the night. We have never had it so good shooting and I am sure it is so for many teams across the world.
“Our shooting was incredible and we are surprised by what we achieved.
“It was just that Nigeria happened to be the team on ground the day we got it so right. If it was another team and we had this kind of shooting performance they could never have come near us.
“Indeed, it was a night of shots on both sides because the Nigerians were scoring highly too initially, with the difference coming more from the latter stages.

First Day I Brought Money Home From Acting, I Became Mum's Favourite Son - Desmond Elliot

Click for Full Image Size
Desmond Elliot may need no introduction as he is a household name in Nollywood, but there are some things that may be new to his fans. In this interview with ADUNOLA OLADAPO, he speaks on such issues. Excerpts

How long have you been planning the movie directing career you are into right now?

A couple of years before I started in 2008. I decided to go fully into it when I started co-producing in 2007 and then I just thought I should just go into directing. It happened while I was acting and Lancelot inspired me a lot because at some point, we were mostly working with him. I liked the way he was driving the stories, I just reckoned that it was something I would love to do.

Did you go for any professional training?

Not at the beginning but yes, eventually. It is just like my life in the industry, at first, I just started and after some time, I went for training. I took courses in directing and read lots of books on directing, just to improve on what I am doing.

Which institutions did you take courses at?

Usually, when I go to the United States of America, like I have done twice. In The New York Film Academy, I have taken three-month courses, one month course on it. They are crash programmes basically and directing is something one can do if you put your mind to it. Everybody in the world can try and direct, but its knowing the principles, fundamentals, standards of directing that is the most important and those are things I have tried to learn.

Olympics Men's Basketball 2012: Nigerian team loses to team USA

See Carmelo Anthony , Lebron James and Kobe Bryant laughing at us ...lol
Nigeria's men basketball team, D'Tigers, lost to Team USA last night. No surprise there really, the only surprise for me was how the game ended. Nigeria - 73 USA 156. Ouch!

Team USA used our Nigerian team to make Olympics history. They set Olympics record for most points scored in a game. It was also the biggest margin of victory for a USA team with 83 points. And lastly, it was the most threes made (29) in US Olympics history. Up Naija! lol.

But our boys tried sha! There's no shame

The Blessing in sneezing

Have you ever wondered why someone says ‘bless you’ when you sneeze?
And no one says anything when you belch or cough or even fart. I’m sure you have wondered it as I have. My curiosity drove me to find out the relationship between these two seemingly unrelated phenomenon.
According to findings, wishing someone well after a sneeze originated from time immemorial. During the Early Roman Empire, people would say ‘Jupiter preserve you or salve which meant good health to you and the Greek would wish each other ‘long life’ when someone sneezes.
However, the coinage of bless you after a sneeze is directly attributed to Pope Gregory the Great in AD 590 who it is believed to have uttered it during a bubonic plague as sneezing was believed to be one of the symptoms of the plague.
Funny yet true, almost all countries have a way of saying a greeting after a sneeze, in china to start with when a child sneezes he or she would hear ‘bai sui’ meaning ‘may you live up to 100years (might explain why they live long?). Arabs would say ‘Alhamdulillah’ meaning ‘praise to God’ while Hindus would say ‘live’ or ‘Live well’ among others
Even more superstitious is the belief in some quarter that sneezing releases a bit of a person’s soul through the nose ( I guess I have just a quarter of my soul left at this stage), however a ‘bless you’ would stop the devil from claiming the freed bits.
In however form it may come, science has proven that a sneeze is a reflex action commonly caused by cold, strong odour or an allergy and has no founded spiritual connotation.
Albeit, whether out of courtesy or custom, when next there’s a sneeze around you be sure to say a bless you – Etttcchhhheeemmm!!!! Did I hear a bless me?

Van Persie has ‘signed’ for Juventus – Italian agent

Van Persie
Arsenal forward Robin van Persie has already signed a contract with Juventus, according to a bizarre claim by FIFA agent Fabio Parisi, who is based in Milan and represents the Nigerian defender Tayo Taiwo.
Parisi is of a mind that the Italian champions have agreed a deal with the Dutch forward “for some time” despite his contract with Arsenal not due to expire until next summer.
Juventus, Manchester United and Manchester City have been heavily linked with a move for the 28-year-old Euro 2012 forward.
Amid reports that Juventus will try to sign City forward Edin Dzeko if they fail to land Van Persie, Parisi told an Italian television station, “I think Juventus have had a signed contract with Van Persie for some time locked away in a notary’s desk.
“It is just my opinion, but I think there’s an eight out of 10 chance the Dutchman will join the Bianconeri.

Celebrations as Britain win first gold

Wiggins
Great Britain won their first two gold medals of London 2012 as cyclist Bradley Wiggins took the men’s time trial after rowing pair Heather Stanning and Helen Glover triumphed.
Amid jubilant scenes at Hampton Court, Wiggins became Britain’s most decorated Olympian with seven medals.
“I don’t think my sporting career will ever top this now,” said Wiggins.
It came just four hours after Stanning and Glover produced a superb display to win the women’s pair at Eton Dorney.
Glover said: “This was for the whole of the team and the whole of the country.”
Tour de France winner Wiggins dominated the 44km ride to beat Germany’s Tony Martin by 42 seconds, with Britain’s Chris Froome taking the bronze.
Wiggins moves one medal clear of former rower Sir Steve Redgrave as the most successful British Olympian of all time.

He directed the Assistant Inspector-General of Police Zone 4, Mr. Mike Zuokumor, and the Plateau  State Commissioner of Police, Mr Emmanuel Ayeni, to work out and submit the strategies to him on August 14.

Okonjo-Iweala lied to Nigerians on budget – Reps

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala
The House of Representatives on Wednesday called the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, a liar.
It said the minister lied to Nigerians on the implementation of the 2012 budget by claiming that government had achieved 56 per cent performance.
“It is very clear already that she (Okonjo-Iweala) lied; she has lied to Nigerians”, spokesman for the lower chamber of federal legislature, Zakari Mohammed, said on Wednesday in Abuja.
Contrary to earlier submissions by the finance minister that the budget had recorded 56 per cent implementation, documents submitted to the Senate by the Ministry of Finance on Tuesday indicated that performance of the budget as  of July was a mere 12.6 per cent.
The percentage was indeed lower than the 34 per cent performance the House had scored the budget which had angered the Reps and on the basis of which they had given President Goodluck Jonathan up to September to achieve 100 per cent or face impeachment proceedings.
The documents before the Senate now show that though N324.5bn (34 per cent) was cash-backed last month, only N184.84bn (12.6 per cent) was really available to Ministries Departments and Agencies of government for capital projects as at July 20.
The total capital provision in the budget is N1.5tn.
“The minister should just go and make the appropriate adjustments. It is very clear already that she lied; she has lied to Nigerians,” Mohammed said in a reaction to the new revelation on Wednesday.
However, the Federal Government has said that the controversy over the 2102 budget is a distraction to its implementation.
Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, while briefing journalists after the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting in Abuja, on Wednesday said the lingering controversy between the Executive and the Legislature was distracting the government from effectively implementing the budget.
Maku said, “This controversy is distracting the implementation of the budget.
“The Coordinating Minister of the Economy (Okonjo-Iweala) will appear before the Senate. She is able, she is competent and she has the figure that won’t be contrasted.
“All of us are working. We are implementing the budget because that is what we were appointed to do.”

Zamfara sacks 7,000 ghost workers

The work-force of the Zamfara Government has been pruned to 21,067 following Governor Abdulaziz’s directive that 7,000 unidentified names be deleted from government’s payroll, with effect from July.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that prior to the verification committee’s interim report, Zamfara had 28,183 on its payroll.
The directive is contained in a circular dated July 27, and issued by the state Commissioner for Finance, Alhaji Muazu Nalado.
The commissioner quoted the governor as having said that the July salaries be paid to only workers, who were duly verified as contained in the interim report.
NAN reports that the verification committee last week uncovered more than 7,000 workers, including more than half of government house personnel as ‘ghost workers‘.
In a circular dated July 27, Nalado said that Yari had directed that payment of July salary would be predicated on the outcome of the verification committee’s work.
The circular entitled: “July 2012 salary”, had been sent to the offices of the Principal Private Secretary to the Governor, Secretary to the Government, Head of Service, and other relevant government organs for compliance.
The verification committee, however, ordered those workers not captured during the verification to come forward with their complaints.
Scores of workers who missed the exercise were seen at the secretariat on Wednesday scampering to sort out themselves.

Nigerian athletes will fight for every medal – Nesiama

Athletics Federation of Nigeria technical committee chairman, Omatseye Nesiama disclosed that Nigerian athletes are in top conditions to contest for every medal as the athletics events begin on Friday. He noted that from the look of things, the competition in athletics will be fierce, but the athletes are well motivated to do Nigeria proud since the nation is depending on athletics to fetch medals as other sports, in which Nigeria is represented so far, have been showing little promise.
“Our athletes are raring to go and we as the AFN here in London, we have perfected our technical strategies to make Nigerians proud. “The spirit in camp is high. Its a winning spirit and we are doing everything to maintain it at that tempo,” Navy Captain Nesiama stated.
He added that everything has been put in place to “protect the performance” of the athletes.

Meter Installation: Power Minister Tells Consumers Not To Pay For Poles

Minister of Power, Prof. Barth Nnaji, says it is criminal for any PHCN official to demand for money from electricity consumers to replace wooden electricity poles with concrete ones before installation of pre-paid meters.
The minister made the clarification while briefing State House correspondents on the outcome of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over on Wednesday by Vice-President Namadi Sambo.
Nnaji was reacting to allegations that PHCN officials were demanding for between N20,000 and N30,000 from consumers to effect the swap.
He said poles were public property and consumers should report any PHCN officials that demanded for money to his office.
The minister, however, explained that the exception to the directive was only if the poles were within the premises of a company or a large estate.
“The poles are not owned by individuals unless they are within the property of a company or very large estate, otherwise, the poles tend to be public ownership which means PHCN-owned and therefore, they should not ask for money to change poles.

Ogoni: UN Backs Nigeria’s Decision To Carry Out Oil Clean-up

The United Nations on Wednesday welcomed the decision by the Nigerian Government to clean up a major oil contamination in the Ogoniland region in the country.
The decision comes twelve months after the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) presented a scientific assessment of oil pollution in Ogoniland to the Government, underlining serious public health and environmental impacts.
“On the anniversary of the Ogoniland assessment there are now clear and encouraging signals that the Government is keen to move on the recommendations – this is a welcome development for the people and the environment of this region who have suffered, and continue to suffer, the legacy of some 50 years of unsustainable oil exploration and production,” UNEP’s Executive Director, Achim Steiner, said in a news release.
The independent scientific assessment, carried out over a 14-month period, showed greater and deeper pollution than previously thought after an agency team examined more than 200 locations, surveyed 122 kilometres of pipeline rights of way, analyzed 4,000 soil and water samples, reviewed more than 5,000 medical records and engaged over 23,000 people at local community meetings.
The assessment emphasized the need for swift action to prevent the pollution footprint from spreading further and exacerbating the situation for the Ogoni people, and had proposed an initial sum of $1 billion to cover the first five years of clean-up operations.

Alao-Arisekola’s son granted N100m bail

Justice Habeeb Abiru of an Ikeja High Court on Wednesday granted a bail of N100 million to Abdulahi, son of Ibadan based business man, Alhaji Alao Arisekola over his involvement and his company, Axenergy oil in a N1.9 bilion subsidy scam trial.
Arisekola’s son was last week arraigned before Justice Habeeb Abiru, but refused to hear his bail application based on the objection raised by Economic and Financial Crimes, EFCC’s counsel, Mr Rotimi Jacobs, who said he will file a counter affidavit on point of law.
The ruling followed arguments canvassed by counsels to both parties.
The defence counsel, Babajide Koku, SAN, had argued that Alao never had any criminal record and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty by the court.
“We depose that he will not jump bail. He is a family man. He will be available whenever required. He has a name to protect. Our prayer is that your lordship grant the first defendant bail on liberal terms.”

London Olympics 2012: D’Tigers to play against United States Basketball team today

The Nigerian basketball team D’Tigers were trashed on July 31, 2012 by the Baltic Giants of Lithuania by a whopping 72-53 at the newly built Basketball Arena of the Olympic Park London.
The game which had the score lines almost initially a par, took a different turn when D’Tigers flaunted the games and seemed unable to keep up with their east European counterpart.
It was however a great shocker to Nigerians since an earlier encounter between the duos in the preliminary matches had seen Nigeria thrashing the Lithuania side by an 88-84 defeat.
The Nigerian Tigers would be taking on the United States of America in their next match coming up on Thursday, August 2, 2012 (today).

Why We Lost — D’Tigers’ Coach

D’Tigers’ chief coach, Ayo Bakare has expressed displeasure over the inability of the basketball team to repeat the defeat they handed the world’s best fifth team Lithuania yesterday. Nigeria defeated the Lithuanians during the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Venezuela but yesterday at the basketball arena fell to the better organised Lithuanians 72-53.
Bakare said the Lithuanians played a great game. He fingered injuries in his camp in which five players are either injured or ill, lack of depth in the Nigerian team, poor shooting and inability to move the ball around as responsible for the loss. “In all things we must thank God. It is unfortunate that we lost the game. We didn’t play well offensively. I hate to complain about officiating but my opinion is that the game was also poorly officiated.
The referee took things personal against us at the same time the Lithuanians were better. So, I am not sure the result would have been different even if the officiating was different. Overall, Lithuania played a great game. I feel extremely sad about this result. Ibekwe and Dagunduro including three others are all injured or sick so that deprived us of room for rotation of players.”
