Blood, tears trail Lagos, Ogun floods •6 drown, many missing, as rain enters second day •Passengers stranded, vehicles desert roads •Over 200 people displaced in Ibadan
Elsewhere, one woman reportedly drowned while paddling her canoe on a river at Ayetoro, a boundary town between Ogun and Lagos states, while two persons were feared washed away by flood at Alabede canal at Iyana-Ipaja.
An eyewitness told the Nigerian Tribune that thousands of stranded workers watched with frustration, as the woman, who was said to be alone in the canoe at Ayetoro, struggled vainly as her canoe capsized, following the phenomenal rise in the water level as a result of flooding.
Attempts by some stranded male commuters to rescue her came too late, as the river washed her away and pushed the canoe dangling offshore.
According to an eyewitness, Mrs Idowu Abimbola, many onlookers broke down in tears as they watched the woman battle with death. Many of the commuters thereafter had to seek alternative route on the Abeokuta-Lagos Expressway at Sango Ota to find their way to the Lagos metropolis, where they worked.A young man, who had reportedly taken refuge in a church at Aboru, following severe flooding, narrowly escaped death through the help of some passers-by who used a ladder to bring him out of the place after breaking the roof of the building.
He had screamed for help when the flood overran the premises of the church.
Our correspondents said some residents of Ikola, Ipaja and Aboru communities also claimed that no fewer than five persons were feared drowned and several missing, following severe flooding in the areas.
The rains, which started in the communities at about 9.00 a.m. on Sunday, saw some buildings almost submerged by water, while their occupants hurriedly moved some of their belongings out of the endangered zone.
”I know this area is flood-prone, but I have never witnessed such a volume of water since I moved here in 1999,” explained Mrs Ola Grace, a resident of Akinola Street at Aboru.
Two people holding on to each other for support in the flood on Akinola bridge were swept away by the water.
Another resident of the area, Kayode Ikuomola, claimed that a motorcyclist and his two female passengers drowned in the canal at Pleasure Bus Stop, while trying to navigate through the flood.
Two freshly recovered bodies were seen at Ikola and Alabede, when one of our correspondents visited the affected areas on Monday, while search parties had been organised for many that were still unaccounted for.
People had to provide ladders after breaking into the roofs of buildings at Aboru for trapped occupants to escape from houses that were almost submerged by the flood.(Nigerian Tribune)
Too bad, the effect of this flood was really devastating, and the irony of it is that in my area here in Kogi, we are still expecting rainfall when it is already wrecking havoc in another state. Anyway God knows best though...good morning@all, how was your night?

I'm not writing this to discredit airtel or anything. Infact I like them, fast internet and stuffs like that. But what's all this noise about "go and register your sims" and stuffs like that...they keep disturbing us on the radio to register our sims without providing nereby 'registration points', why will I travel for like 20 or 25km just to register my sim? What kind of system is that?
Summary of the whole story, I just bought a new airtel sim and emm for like 2weeks now, I've not seen a place to register, and the sim has been deactivated in default until I register it. You know, its really frustrating. If we are to register our sims before use, no problem but registration centres should be made available. Bonsoir everyone(dts if there's somebody sef.lolzzzzz)
Don't mind me, am trying to learn french small small, that's why...hope ur day has been good?

Garden egg a solution to obesity and maybe even blindness
Garden eggGarden egg (Solanum melongena) is the fruit in season and for its lovers having steamed yam and stew made with garden egg is a delight. The benefits of eating garden eggs however extend far beyond ensuring that one’s desire for a good breakfast is satisfied.
From Cotonou to Harare, Mozambique to Senegal, this fruit is a highly valued delicacy and constituent of the African food. They also represent fertility and blessing. It is thus not uncommon to find them served during wedding ceremonies across the African continent.
Experts are encouraging people that wants to loss weight to eat more of its fresh form too just as they say that people that are told to protect their heart against cholesterol effects should make it their delight.
In a study undertaken to assess the influence of whole garden egg plant in comparison to apples and oats on serum lipid profile in rats fed a high cholesterol diet that were obtained from the animal unit of Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology of the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Benin, Benin City, Nigeria, the results suggested that eating garden egg is better at reducing blood cholesterol than apple and oat.
The lipid profile includes total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol (often called good cholesterol), LDL-cholesterol (often called bad cholesterol), and triglycerides. A high level of blood cholesterol level, more particularly low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, is a primary risk factor for cardiovascular diseases such as stroke and heart disease.
James Karho Edijala, Samuel Ogheneovo Asagba and Uzezi Atomatofa from the Department of Biochemistry, Delta State University, Abraka, Nigeria as well as George Edaghogho Eriyamremu from the Department of Biochemistry, University of Benin, Benin City, Nigeria, did the study. It was published in the 2005 edition of the Pakistan Journal of Nutrition.
According to their observation, garden eggplant significantly reduced weight gain in those rats that eat this fruit compared with those that had oat and apple in both the mid-term and full-term studies.
The experts attributed the health benefits of eating foods like garden egg to its effectiveness at boosting High plasma HDL-cholesterol. They stated that it may be beneficial since studies have unequivocally established an inverse relationship between HDL-cholesterol and incidence of cardiovascular diseases like stroke.
Guimaraes and his co-workers in the 2000 edition of the Brazilian Journal of Medical Biology Research reported a similar observation with garden eggplant juice infusion in humans. They said the infusion has a modest but temporary effect on persons with cholesterol problem.
SENATORS ANGRY OVER 40% REDUCTION IN THEIR ALLOWANCES
SERVING senators and members of the House of Representatives are said to be angry with the leadership of the two chambers of the National Assembly for allegedly orchestrating a 40 per cent reduction in the allowances of the lawmakers.
The revelation first came to the knowledge of the new senators a day after their resumption, when they were told of their privileges and entitlements.
Sources at the closed sessions held separately by the two chambers had confirmed that the new senators and members of the House were shocked that they would be receiving far lass than their predecessors, whereas the cost of living in Abuja was getting higher by the day.
The discontent forced members of the two chambers to immediately embark on a three-week recess, which terminated on June 28.
It was, however, gathered that what started as informal discussions among members of the new Assembly was fast developing to a revolt, at the weekend.
Some new members of the House of Representatives were said to be pushing for a joint meeting with their colleagues in the Senate to discuss the way out.
It was learnt that the aggrieved lawmakers had sent words to the Senate President, David Mark and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Aminu Tambuwal, on the ways to help remedy the situation.
Some of the lawmakers were complaining that the total money paid to them for transport and accommodation for four years could not pay for one year rent in Abuja,
Sources confirmed that while the old time senators were not badly affected, as they had settled accommodation issues before now, the worst hit were the new senators and members of the House of Representatives, who had to pay through their nose for rent. (Courtesy: Nigerian Tribune)
Should their take home pay be reduced, what do you think?
Though for me oh, reducing their allowance is the right thing to do. Even with all the allocations they keep sharing among themselves, we are not really seeing the effect of the money at the grassroot level, no 'tangible' development at all.
