Professor’s hubby commits suicide in Ilorin

 

The husband of Prof. Oyeronke Olademo of the Department of Religions, University of Ilorin, Olubunmi, was on Wednesday found dangling from a tree in the family’s uncompleted building at Oke-Odo, Tanke, Ilorin, Kwara State.

According to a source, who pleaded anonymity, Olademo requested some money from his wife on Tuesday. But Oyeronke was said to have declined his request.

Our correspondent learnt that Olubunmi, a businessman, had initially left a note threatening to commit suicide if his wife refused to give him the money.

Our correspondent was informed that Olademo later called his wife on the phone reiterating his threat, but she would not bulge, instead she reported the matter at the Tanke Police Station.

CBN, MDAs abandon currency materials, hospital equipment at ports

Some key government ministries, departments and agencies have abandoned their consignments at the nation’s ports for over 12 months now.

Among the affected government agencies, according to investigation by our correspondents, are the Ministry of Health, which has 34 abandoned cargoes at the ports; and the Central Bank of Nigeria with 20 cargoes.

Others are the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, which has two, and the Delta Steel Company with 22 consignments.

While the CBN consignment contains currency materials; that of the Health ministry has equipment meant for hospitals across the federation.

Nigeria loses N780bn to oil theft annually – Shell

The Managing Director, Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited, Mr. Mutiu Sunmonu, has said that the country is losing $5bn (N780bn) annually to oil theft in the Niger Delta region.

Speaking in Abuja on Wednesday during a courtesy visit to the Executive Secretary, Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, Ms. Zainab Ahmed, Sunmonu said, “Our greatest challenge is about criminal activities where people steal crude oil every day. Nigeria is losing at least $5bn every year as a result of criminals stealing our crude and exporting our crude illegally.

Drogba hails Chelsea away goal

Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has pointed to his side’s away goal against Benfica as the key to progressing through to the Champions League semi-finals.

The Stamford Bridge outfit was a 1-0 winner on Tuesday night courtesy of Salomon Kalou’s late effort, meaning that the club heads into the second leg with a considerable advantage.

Drogba had been criticised in the build up to the tie after a video on Chelsea TV emerged of him appearing to mock the Portuguese side when he and teammates were filmed watching the Champions League quarterfinal draw, a suggestion which was later denied by David Luiz.

Jonathan charges Team Nigeria to win medals

PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan has charged Team Nigeria to go all out for medals at the London 2012 Olympics and surpass Nigeria’s performance at Atlanta ‘96 Olympics where the team won two gold medals.

Chioma Ajunwa won gold in the women’s long jump while the football team captained by Kanu Nwankwo also won gold.

The President made the call on Tuesday after his investiture as the Grand Patron of the Nigeria Olympic Committee conferred on him at a grand reception at the Ladi Kwali Hall of the Sheraton Hotels, Abuja. Jonathan, who was represented by Vice President Namadi Sambo, said Nigeria had everything to surpass the previous achievement.

He said, “I’m indeed grateful for the honour bestowed on me by the Nigeria Olympic Committee. I am happy to know the efforts already put in both by the NOC and the NSC to ensure that Nigeria excel at the Olympics. I urge our ambassadors to go all out to make us proud and surpass the feats recorded at the Atlanta Olympics.”

The President also commended corporate organisations for throwing their weight behind the efforts of the NOC and the NSC in giving the country a descent outing at the Olympics and promised that such assistance would not go unappreciated.

Taiwo Hassan (Ogogo) - Odunlade's Success Is My Joy

In 1982, when top Yoruba actor,Alhaji Taiwo Hassan popularly called Ogogo, starred in a stage play, entitled: Nkan Omo Olu Ibadan, and received a standing ovation, he knew he had a calling to be an Actor.

But he veered into the Civil Service and worked with Lagos State Water Corporation. Yet, his passion for the make-belief world made him resign to follow his dreams. Movies such as Wicked Boy, Atitebi, Owo Blow, Legal wife and a host of others stand him out as a role interpreter.

Lately, some people are saying that with the emergence of Odunlade Adekola, producers are gradually abandoning him. In a recent interview,the talented thespian opens up on the tale.

That’s not true,everybody with his own destiny.I have never envied anybody since I started out.I am always happy anytime I see others rising in the same trade I do. It’s a thing of joy.My success doesn’t hinder anybody’s so also Odunlade Adekola’s rise has nothing to do with the success of Ogogo.

People only like insinuating. Just a few days ago,Odun and I were on a movie location. He was even the one that directed the movie which I featured in.So,people only like talking rubbish.

We have a good relationship,his success is my joy.I just left a location,very soon I am still moving to another one.I can’t even count the number of movies I take part in,I have also lost count of movie scripts I get in a month.

Must it be Ogogo always?
In Yoruba movie genre alone, we can’t count the number of movies we shoot on a daily basis. So,all producers can’t use only one face to lead their movies.They must be dynamic, new entrants must be allowed to showcase the stuff they are made of.

Asked,so,Ogogo is still waxing stronger;he said (Laughs) Maas Allah,I am there,still very relevant.And by the special grace of Almighty Allah,I will continue to be relevant and I will forever be relevant.

Odunlade Adekola and I I am very blunt and God-fearing. I actually went out on a date with Odunlade Adekola. I will not deny it. But we are no longer dating each other. We are just friends now. In fact, we will remain just friends for the rest of our lives. We are still close. People tend to get the wrong ideas when they notice that a particular guy casts a particular lady in his movies constantly.

Odun is a very sentimental person. He believes that I am a good actress. He is well known. Right now, he is number one in the Yoruba movie industry. He believes that somebody can benefit from his stardom and succeed as well. I think that was what he did for me. God will not come down to help you. He would send you help through people. God used him to lift me up in the industry.


Why we broke up
We broke up for a personal reason. I wanted to move on with my life. Odun was married with two adorable sons and he was not ready to take a second wife. So there was no point in continuing the relationship. I would have married him if he had asked me.

I know my father would not have been pleased with that if he was still alive. But marriage is about understanding and happiness. If I find a man that understands and respects me, loves and cares for me, what else do I need? Despite the fact that we are no longer lovers, we still communicate to each other. It was rumoured I fought with Flakky Ididowu over Odun.
