Senate calls for the revocation of Dana Air’s License

The Senate on Tuesday January 29 2013 issued a resolution asking the Federal Government of Nigeria to revoke the operating license of Dana Air.

This decision is coming on the heels of the report by the Senate and House of Representative Joint Committee on Aviation concerning the investigation on the crashed Dana Airline. The Senate also recommended that the Director General of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Harold Demuren be sacked ‘for negligence and incompetence’.

It would be recalled that in December 2012, NCAA issued a new Air Operators Certificate to Dana Air after the Federal Government had earlier in September 2012, reinstated the airline’s license allowing it to resume only test flights.

Dana Airline resumed flights with celebs including Baskethmouth, DIPP, Harrysong and Buchi flying with them on Friday, January 4, 2013 seven months after its flight 992, an MD-83 aircraft crashed in Iju Ishaga, a Lagos suburb, on Sunday June 3, 2012 killing over 153 passengers and crew members.

KSA, Obey to stage Oleku Concert in London

The success of the Oleku Concert, one of the musical projects that rocked Lagos in 2012, has boosted the morale of music superstar, King Sunny Ade.
The concert had, for the first time, brought KSA and his veteran contemporary, Chief Ebenezer Obey, onto the stage where they performed together at a night that attracted many dignitaries and socialites.
In an interview with our correspondent on Sunday, KSA said, “The Oleku Concert was wonderful. For 30 years, my great friend and I, I mean Chief Commander Ebenezer Fabiyi Obey, had not performed together. But this was achieved last year and everyone is happy about it.”

Funke Akindele battles Genevieve for AfricaMagic awards

The AfricaMagic Viewers Choice Awards has ignited a ‘war’ between Funke Akindele and Genevieve Nnaji, who have been nominated in the Best Actress Category. The two  Nollywood actresses are among five screen divas slugging it out alongside Bubu Mazibuko, Nolwazi Shange and Ghanaian Jackie Appiah.

While Akindele and Johnson are nominated based on their roles in the films Maami and The Mirror Boy, others are there on the platforms of Man on Ground, Otelo Burning and Perfect Picture.

In the nominations released on Monday, Akindele also features in the Best Actress in a Comedy category with The Return of Jenifa, where she is competing with Lilian Esoro (Clinic Matters) and Mercy Johnson (Dumebi the Dirty Girl).

Inactive telephone lines now 40.4 million – NCC

The number of inactive telephone lines in the country has continued to increase and has hit the 40.4 million mark, the latest subscriber data released on Tuesday by the Nigerian Communications Commission has revealed.

The data also revealed that about 12.7 million telephone lines went redundant in November 2012

The NCC data showed that in January, February, March and April 2012, the inactive lines were 31.9 million, 35.2 million, 35.8 million and 35 million, respectively.

In May, the figure fell to 34.6 million, indicating that many subscribers made calls from their old lines or activated new lines that month.

Inactive lines, according to the NCC data, increased further to 33.7 million in June, 37 million in July and 38 million in August 2012.

The figure rose to 28.6 million and 40.4 million at the end of October and November last year.

This, according to experts, represents the highest so far in Nigeria.

We’ll take B’Haram seriously after 30 days – FG

The Federal Government on Tuesday reacted to the offer of ceasefire by a  faction of the fundamentalist  Islamic group, Boko Haram,  by giving a condition to the sect.

The condition: Boko Haram must  stop its  violence in the North for a period of one month.

The Chief of Defence Staff, Admiral Ola Ibrahim, stated the Federal Government’s position just as the   Federal Capital Territory  Minister, Senator Bala  Mohammed,  summoned an emergency security meeting over increased  presence of  foreign immigrants in the FCT.

Ibrahim spoke  with journalists at the opening of the 2013 seminar on National Security with the theme, Contemporary National Security Challenges: Policy Option, organied by the Alumni Association of the National Defence College, Abuja.

 He said that while security chiefs were excited by the development, the olive branch  offered by  the sect called  for caution.

El-Rufai apologises for tweeting ‘Jesus Joke’

Mallam Nasir El-Rufai has apologised for the ‘Jesus Joke’ he shared on twitter.

A certain Ogunyemi Bukola, with the handle; @zebbook had tweeted: ‘If Jesus criticized Jonathan’s govt, Maku/Abati/Okupe will say he slept with Mary Magdalene’. After this, El-Rufai copied the tweet and added the letters ‘LWKMD’ which means ‘Laugh Wan Kill Me Die’.

The joke did not seem to go down well with some of his Christian followers who respectfully protested the joke calling it distasteful and obnoxious.

The former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) had to go to his Facebook page to publish a full apology.

Micheal and his mother Cissy, were guests on Oprah Winfrey’s talk show, ‘Oprah Next Chapter’, on Monday, January 28, 2013 where he confessed to have been the first to introduce the late singer to crack cocaine in the 80s.
