Oil subsidy removal: NANS gives Jonathan 24-hour ultimatum

THE National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, Joint Campus Committee, Ondo State and the Senate of the National Association of Ondo State Students, NAOSS, yesterday gave President Goodluck Jonathan a 24- hour ultimatum to reverse the removal of subsidy on petroleum products or face massive protests.
At a briefing in Akure,  the students threatened that the two bodies would mobilize over one million members across the country to protest what they called President Jonathan’s inhuman action.
They condemned the subsidy removal, stressing that it showed that Mr. President was insensitive to the plight of the masses.

Coordinator, Omotayo Oladele, noted that with the removal of fuel subsidy, President Jonathan has succumbed to pressure from the few Nigerians with multinational business interest at the expense of the down trodden masses.
Oguntoyinbo noted that the Federal Government had just opened the door of business for the few rich people to exploit the masses through high fuel prices, saying, “Mr. President has shown that he has no respect for rule of law by removing subsidy on petroleum products without the approval of the National Assembly. We are ready to mobilize our members across the country to ensure that Mr. President reverses his decision.”

On his part, Oladele explained that while the country faced serious security challenges, the Federal Government decided to increase the prices of petroleum products which had pushed the country into a dangerous crisis of monumental dimension.
Meanwhile, the Ondo State council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has described the removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government, as “showing government’s insensitivity to the views and opinions of the citizens.”
