As
part of the efforts to check the rate of accidents in the country, the
Federal Road Safety Commission said on Wednesday that it had concluded
plans to enforce 100-kilometre per hour speed limit on the Lagos-Ibadan
Expressway.
FRSC Ogere Unit Commander, Mr. Godwin
Samgbaza, who disclosed this in an interview during a motorised patrol
exercise on the expressway, stated that the corps was ready to ensure
that motorists no longer exceeded the speed limit on the expressway.
Samgbaza added that the unit would collaborate with other commands along the expressway to ensure its strict observance.
He said Mowe, Sagamu and Ogere Unit
Commands would employ the use of six patrol vehicles to lead motorists
to observe the speed limit along the corridor.
The Ogere unit commander further noted
that the introduction of the speed patrol vans would enable FRSC
operatives to carry out prompt emergency rescue service and ensure the
availability of patrol men on the expressway.
“The purpose of the exercise as
envisioned by the zonal command is to ensure that will actualise 20 per
cent reduction in crashes and 30 per cent reduction in crash-related
fatalities.
“It is also in line with Corps external
strategic corporate goals, the year 2010 United Nations decade of action
and 2015 ACCRA declaration of Road Safety,” he said.
