State Governor Kayode Fayemi and the Catholic Bishop of Ekiti Diocese,
Most Rev. Felix Ajakaye, have asked Pope Francis 1 to use his position
to bring peace to the troubled parts of the world.
Both gave the charge in different statements on Monday.
They noted that the world needed a
spiritual leader, who would unite all religions and bring peace to every
troubled parts of the globe.
The governor, through his Chief Press
Secretary, Mr. Olayinka Oyebode, said, “I urge Pope Francis 1 to use his
position to ensure peace in the world. The Pontiff is assuming the
papacy at a critical period when his counsel and intervention would be
needed in troubled parts of the world.”
Fayemi advised the Pontiff to use his good offices to unite all the major religions in the world to ensure religious harmony.
Wishing the new Pope a successful tenure
in office, Fayemi urged Catholics and adherents of other faiths to
support him in prayers in the discharge of the task ahead of him.
Ajakaye, who described the new Pope as a
man of humility, said he would use his simplicity and closeness to God
to serve the poor.
The Bishop added, “I urge all the people of the world to cooperate with the new Pope to ensure peace across the globe.
“There is no doubt that the Holy Father
would bring to bear his humility and simple way of life. I also advise
Nigerians to emulate the simple and humble way of life of Holy Father to
remember that our politicians are in positions of authority to serve
the poor people. It is not an opportunity to amass wealth at the
detriment of the common person.
“We thank God that his election was
smooth and spiritually inclined. He has shown the type of Papacy he
would maintain and let me also say that there is no struggle for
succession in the Catholic Church.’’
