The Christian Association of Nigeria has said that there is nothing biblically wrong with cremation.
A Special Adviser to the CAN President on Conflict Resolution, Rev. Ladi Thompson, said this in an interview with Saturday PUNCH.
Although some clerics had kicked against the recently passed Lagos Cremation law, Thompson said it did not negate any biblical principle, describing it as the choice of an individual.
He said, “In Christianity, we believe you are a spirit, we believe you have a soul and live in a body. Your body is terrestrial; it is dust-to-dust, ashes-to-ashes. With this understanding, some people may not mind cremation when they die for reasons known to them.
“The cremation issue is not controversial at all; it is just an option as long as it is not by compulsion.”
The Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, recently signed the state’s Cremation Bill into law. He explained that the cremation law was voluntary, adding that its enactment showed how the concept of globalisation had taken its roots in the state.
