THE Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, and the Trade Union Congress, TUC, yesterday, took over negotiation for the payment of the N18,000 new minimumwage to Enugu State workers following the breakdown of talks between the state government and the organised labour in the state.
Public servants in the state have stayed away from office sincelast week even after the expiration of three-day warning strike called by labour leaders. The workers alleged that their leaders had been compromised by government. Though the union leaders denied the allegation, but the confusion lingers.
Leaders of the Nigeria labour movement, whohave been in Enugu since Sunday, addressed workers on the situation in the state and urged Governor Sullivan Chimeto implement the national minimum wage across board within two weeks or face a total shut downof all government and socio-economic activities.
Adding a dramatic turnto the rally held at the Workers’ Square near the state secretariat, the workers and the visiting national leaderschanted No to Chime Wage, insisting on the full minimum wage implementation.
Deputy National President of the NLC, Comrade Kiri Mohammed, who announced the measures in Enugu stated that at the endof the two-week ultimatum, all leaders of labour unions from across the 36 states will be deployed to Enugu in a mother-of-all rallies that will signal total strike in the state.
