Don’t pull down Nigeria over fuel subsidy removal •Oyo CAN chairman counsels Jonathan, govs

AGAINST the background of reported endorsement of fuel subsidy removal by the federal and state government, the chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Oyo State chapter, Pastor Ayo Olabisi, has charged the leadership at both tiers of government not to allow themselves to be coerced into taking a decision that was capable of pulling down the nation.
Pastor Olabisi gave the charge in an exhortation at the 2011 carol service organised by the Oyo State government and held at the Government House arcade, on Sunday.
He said the global economic crisis which robbed off on the citizens of the socio-economic fabric of the nation was enough to ignite hopelessness, emotional and social trauma among Nigerians, saying that additional burden should not be imposed on the people.
He said: “The threat of economic collapse, social disintegration, moral decay, religious conflicts, political instability, global health epidemics, and the clash of civilisation demand leadership that can see beyond the present into the preferred future, a leader that has the skill to transform his good vision into reality and has the courage to inspire the followers.
“The problems of energy with its epileptic supplies, the Nigerian roads with death traps and the issue of unemployment are serious matters the government should strive to overcome in order to restore confidence in Nigerians once again.”
The cleric also advised politicians to eschew bitterness and hatred in the polity and demonstrate unfeigned love for the masses as well as fulfilment of promises.
Pastor Olabisi commended the state governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, for the provision 20,000 jobs for the army of unemployed youths in the state, noting that the stride would drastically reduce the worsening state of insecurity, while calling for a sustained employment generation programme in the state.
In a remark on the occasion, Governor Ajimobi solicited support for the various programmes he had lined up for the repositioning, transformation and restoration of the lost glory of the state.
The governor captured the essence of Christmas celebration to include the invaluable lessons of the spirit of service, sacrifice, forgiveness and the transience nature of human lives.
Top government functionaries, traditional and religious leaders as well as hundreds of Oyo State citizens were in the well-attended service.
