The
Senate Committee on Sports has invited officials of the National Sports
Commission, the Nigeria Football Federation and the Nigeria Premier
League to its investigative hearing on the dwindling fortunes of sports
in the country.
The hearing which is slated for March 26 and 27, is
expected to cover all aspects of sports development, and not restricted
to football.
Vice Chairman of the committee, Senator Oyetunde
Hussein, confirmed to our correspondent on Thursday on the telephone
that invitations had already been sent out. He said although the motion
brought forward by the Chairman of the committee, Senator Adamu Gumba,
from which the investigation derived its mandate focused on the
misfortunes of the Nigerian football, the committee’s terms of reference
covered other sports.
“We are going to take a look the situation with other sports, not only football.
“For me it is not a probe, we are trying to find out
why we are where we are in terms of sports so that we can find
solutions,” he said.
