VC tackles NUC over Lead City licence suspension

Authorities of Lead City University, Ibadan, have criticised the suspension of the university’s licence by the National Universities Commission.
The NUC on Wednesday announced the suspension of the university’s licence along with six other private universities for allegedly contravening the law governing the establishment of private universities in the country.
Vice-Chancellor, LCU, Prof. Olufemi Onabajo, while addressing journalists on Friday, accused the NUC of implementing draconian policy.
Onabajo also accused the Executive Secretary of NUC, Julius Okojie, of arbitrariness and witch-hunt.
Onabajo, who stressed that there was no basis for the commission’s action, alleged that the NUC boss had earlier threatened that “though I cannot withdraw your licence, I’m going to kill the university by instalment.”
The VC, who recalled that the university was ranked third best private university by the NUC in 2007, explained that the commission’s duty was to foster growth and development of universities.
The Chairman, Governing Council and Pro-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Jide Owoeye, stated that NUC had not written any letter on the suspension of licence.
