Secretary in Edo State, Mathew Urhoghide, has said the party will not
stop any of its members wishing to contest Governor Adams Oshiomhole’s
re-election.
Speaking exclusively with our
correspondent on Wednesday, Urhoghide however restated the party’s
decision not to seek redress at the state Election Petitions Tribunal
against Oshiomhole’s victory at the poll.
Chiding some of the party members for
not working enough for PDP’s victory before the July 14 poll, Urhoghide
who spoke on the telephone, said it would be near impossible to overturn
Oshiomhole’s election victory.
He said, “The party cannot stop any
member who feels aggrieved over the outcome of the governorship election
from going to court. It is their fundamental right, but the party has
taken a position that it will not go to court.
“That decision flows from the national
body of the party and that was why it was issued by the state party
chairman (Chief Dan Orbih). It is only the state chairman that is a
member of the National Executive Council, and that is why I don’t want
to comment much on the matter.”
Responding to a call by the leadership
of the PDP Edo South Senatorial district for the party’s standard
bearer, Charles Airhiavbere, to go ahead with his petition at the
tribunal and Appeal Court to challenge Oshiomhole’s electoral victory,
the Publicity Secretary hinted that it might be an exercise in futility.
“It is not only Edo South Senatorial
district that makes up the party. But anyone can exercise rights and the
PDP will not stop them. There are antecedents. The CPC said it will not
go to court following the outcome of the 2011 Presidential Election,
but Buhari went ahead with his litigation, and the party did not stop
him,” he said.
Urhoghide called on Edo PDP members to sheath swords and work for the progress of the party.
