MEN of the Nigerian Police on Tuesday arrested four senior editors of
The Nation Newspaper, its Managing Editor (Northern Operations) Alhaji
Yusuf Ali; the Abuja Bureau Chief, Mr Yomi Odunuga; Deputy Editor, Mr
Lasisi Ogienagbon and the News Editor, Weekend Titles, Mr Dapo Elufade.
The policemen, who were said to be in mufti, were said to have
arrested them in connection with the publication of a letter allegedly
written by former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, to President
Goodluck Jonathan, recommending the sack of some directors-general of
some federal parastatal agencies.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Olusola Amore,
confirmed the arrest, saying that it was in connection with the
publication of the said letter.
At the time of filing this story, the editors were still being held by the police.
A release by The Nation management, signed by Kunle Fagbemi, the General Editor confirmed the story.
Meanwhile, nine detectives, led by Mr Emma Ogolo came in two vehicles
(a white-colour Rover Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV), marked PFN 357 B and
a blue-colour Peugeot 504 salon car, marked 2413 B).
Three of the detectives entered the premises of the company on 27B,
Fatai Atere Way, Matori, Mushin, while the two vehicles parked outside
the gate had three men waiting in them.
In each of the waiting vehicles were an armed policeman, a plain-clothes security operative and the driver.
They asked to see the Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief, Mr Victor
Ifijeh and the Editor, Mr Gbenga Omotoso. They were not in the office
when the officers called at about 2.00 p.m.
The Deputy Editor, Mr Ogienagbon, who attended to them, was arrested
alongside the News Editor of the Weekend Titles, Mr Olufade. Ogienagbon
has been flown to Abuja.
The Managing Editor in charge of Northern Operations, Alli and the
Bureau Chief, Mr Odunuga, had earlier been picked up at the Abuja office
of the newspaper and are being detained at the Force Headquarters.
