FIFA to insure Super Eagles, others

Super
The world football governing body FIFA has said that it would provide insurance cover for national team players engaged in official competitions on the FIFA calendar. The decision is expected to improve relationship between countries and clubs as players’ injuries during major competitions for their national teams have always been a thorny issue.
Nigeria’s Yusuf Mohammed was seriously injured while playing with the Super Eagles at the 2010 African Nations Cup in Angola while Arjen Robben got injured at the 2010 South Africa World Cup playing for the Netherlands.
FIFA’s new position was made public on Thursday by the president Sepp Blatter while addressing the European football congress. Blatter told the annual congress that FIFA will pay for “total insurance coverage” for international players.
He said, “This is an insurance coverage for the players, for the clubs and the (national) associations for all matches on FIFA’s international calendar. You have to take into account the best interests of the players.”
The policy can take effect after FIFA’s 208 national members approve the proposal at their gathering in May.
