Jonathan, Ekweremadu condemn Mali coup

Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu
President Goodluck Jonathan and Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu on Thursday condemned the reported takeover of government by rebel soldiers in Mali.
He described the take over from the democratically-elected government of President Amadou Toure as a setback to the consolidation of democracy in Mali in particular and Africa in general.
Jonathan’s position was contained in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, in Abuja.
The President warned the coup plotters to allow the ongoing democratic process in the country to run its full course.
He advised that they should avoid doing anything that would truncate the electoral process, especially the presidential election slated for April.
Jonathan also cautioned against the shedding of innocent blood and unnecessary destruction of property of citizens and foreigners resident in Mali.
He said the coup plotters had only embarked on a fruitless mission of supplanting a constitutional government by other means, going against the current global grain of constitutionalism.
