The Minister of Sports Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi has assured fans and stakeholders in the Nigerian league that the Sports Ministry is working hard to resolve the sponsorship problem as quickly as possible. The Minister who spoke in Lagos on Monday affirmed the popular belief that Total Promotions clearly and officially won the bid to sponsor the Nigerian football league.
Abdullahi said that he had studied all documents and processes concerning the bid before arriving at the conclusion.
He said, “It is very clear to me that Total Promotions won the rights to the Nigerian league. And I have held an open meeting with everyone involved in this matter. It was a sincere and open meeting with all parties and I said this to everyone’s hearing.
“When NPL wrote to Globacom to exercise their rights of first refusal, they refused to take it. Instead they wrote a letter saying that the league was bad, rubbish; nobody was watching it and it was of no value. Then the NPL advertised for open bid and they soon discovered that MTN was backing Total Promotions and they decided to jump in.
“But how can you desire to buy what you have documented as bad and worthless? They were not really keen. But the matter went to court which has really delayed everything. But it is our resolve to settle this matter once and for all. We are talking with everyone concerned and I am sure that very soon the issues will be resolved quietly in a friendly manner.”
