Oyo begins reconstruction of bridges at flood sites

The Oyo State government has begun the process of reconstruction of bridges destroyed by the devastating impact of last Friday’s flooding that wreaked havoc onroads and infrastructure in the state.
An unconfirmed numberof persons were killed inthe late night downpour, which swept many houses and rendered many homeless.
On Monday, the state government brought in a team of engineers from CCECC Nigeria Limited, who inspected the Apete and Olomi bridges, with the intention of commencing construction works on them.
However, as temporarypalliative measures for the people in these areas, the state government, through the Ministry of Works, also began the construction of foot bridges at the Apete and Olomi areas of the state capital, on Monday.
Engineers of the Ministry of Works, in the early part of the day, went round the bridges, assessing the extent of damage and the way round the impasse.
They were also to beginimmediate rehabilitationof feeder roads at the Apete and Ajibode areas of the state capital, so as to provide alternative roads to people living in the areas.
According to a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant (Public Communications) to Governor Abiola Ajimobi,Dr Festus Adedayo, the engineers of the ministry of were also expected to begin an immediate provision of reinforcement to the roads at the Oluyole andOlorunda areas of Ibadan which were destroyed by the flood.
It would be recalled that the engineers of the ministry had earlier put into passable condition, the road fromParliament Road, through Premier Hotel, which was also destroyed by the flood.
Meanwhile, distribution of relief materials continued today at the centres designated by the government for handing over of palliatives to victims of the flood disaster.
At the Orita Challenge area, a designated, centre, Abbey Technical, was used forthe distribution of beddings and food items to victims, as well as drugs to victimsof the disaster.(Nigerian Tribune)
