The violent Islamic fundamentalist sect, Boko Haram, has named the suicide bomber that drove theexplosives-laden HondaAccord car into the United Nations office building in Abuja last Friday.
He was a 27-year-old Nigerian named Mohammed Abul Barra, the Cable News Network quoted a spokesman for the sect, one Abul Qaqa, tohave said in a brief interview.
Qaqa said the organisation bombed the United Nations because the UN is supporting the oppression of Islam, adding that the group is “at war against infidels.”
“All over the world, theU.N. is a global partner in the oppression of believers. We are at war against infidels. In Nigeria, the Federal Government tries to perpetuate the agendaof the United Nations,”the Boko Haram spokesman said.
The car drove into the building and exploded at about 10.30 am, blasting the structure and killing 23 persons. About 80 others were injured.
Barely 24 hours after the incident, Boko Haram, a sect which has the Islamisation ofthe country as its objective, claimed responsibility for the attack.
A lone suicide bomber belonging to the group had similarly drove a Honda Accord car packed with explosivesinto the Louis Edet Police Headquarters in Abuja on June 16. The bomber and one policeman died in the attack while 70 vehicles were either burnt or destroyed.
On the UN bombing incident, Qaqa said, “We have told everyone that the U.N. is the bastion of the global oppression of Muslims all over the world.
“As such, we have warned everyone to steer clear of such places. They should steer clear of such places that we have mentioned it in the past. The battle has changed.”
The bombed UN building houses about 26 agencies of the global body, including the U.N. Development Program, the children’sorganisation UNICEF, the Office on Drugs and Crime, the Joint Program on HIV and AIDS and the U.N. Development Fund for Women among others.
