Nigerian players make gains in Euro moves

Taiye Taiwo
The January transfer window in Europe closed on Tuesday but not without some Super Eagles players moving to clubs where they are likely to get more playing time or bigger remuneration.
The most notable of the transfers involving Nigerians was Taye Taiwo, moving from AC Milan to Queens Park Rangers on a six-month loan deal.
Taiwo joined the Italian giants in the summer of 2011 but a lack of regular playing time at the San Siro forced him to seek a club that could accommodate his playing style and afford his fat salary.
QPR also acquired the services of defender Nedum Onuoha, prying the 25-year-old from the hands of Manchester City for £3m.
The two Nigerian defenders, together with Bobby Zamora and Djibril Cisse, made QPR the highest spending club during the transfer window.
Against all expectations, West Brom refused to let Osaze Odemwingie cross over to Fulham as Roy Hodgson insisted he was not for sale. Fulham, however, have not ruled out a summer bid for the former Lille forward.
Former Neuchatel Xamax striker Kalu Uche got off the unemployed list when Espanyol brought him back to the La Liga on Monday. His former Swiss club were kicked out of the league after they were found guilty of forgery and financial impropriety. Uche featured for Espanyol in the 2000/2001 season and promised during his unveiling on Wednesday to be at his best for the team.
