PDP proposes March for congresses, convention
IN an apparent bid to quell suspicion of tenure elongation of its present National Working Committee (NWC) members, generated by the inability of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to conduct, as planned, its national convention to elect new national officers, the party has proposed mid March for the National Executive Committee (NEC) to consider a new timetable.
The party had, earlier in the week, announced the postponement of the ward, local government, states and zonal congresses and national convention scheduled for February.
Also cancelled were the meetings of the Board of Trustees (BoT) and the National Executive Committee (NEC) earlier scheduled for February 1 and February 2 respectively.
It had explained that the postponement became necessary because of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) timetable for gubernatorial elections scheduled to hold in four states of the federation, which spread across the entire month of February.
But the postponement heightened anxiety among party faithful, who suspected that the move was a veiled attempt to retain the present national officers in their posts, even when their tenure had ended.
However, following a meeting in the State House on Wednesday night, between President Goodluck Jonathan and state governors elected on the ticket of the PDP, the party's NWC met in an emergency session on Thursday, to reconsider the decisions.
