http://nationalmirroronline.net/thumbnail.php?file=/shan_486236187.jpg&size=article_large

“I tried looking for my dad to be sincere. I went to the company where he worked. I tried to look for his file but there were no records. The total sum of it is that I searched and searched but couldn’t get enough data to locate his family but I got enough to know that my dad was from Manchester and lived in Nigeria as an expatriate. At a point, I just gave up. But I know who my father was. I remember him with my five year-old eyes and mind. He died, he didn’t abandon my mum and I.”

Cleric foils attempt to kidnap two children

A  60-year-old cleric, Mr. Sunday Ulion, has frustrated an attempt by one Mr. Godson Onuoha to kidnap two children, aged between seven and nine.
Ulion, who runs a prayer and healing centre at 135, Afokang Road in Calabar South, said when he woke up about 2am on Sunday, he saw a boy and a girl, covered with clothes sleeping on his veranda.
He said on further observation, he saw Onuoha, who hails from Abia State, standing far away at such an ungodly hour frantically making calls.
Although Ulion acknowledged that Onuoha sometimes visited his ‘healing home’ for prayers, he was shocked that the suspect could not offer any satisfactory response when he was questioned regarding the children.

Zaaki Azzay on Wife Battery Allegation

Read a statement from Zaaki Azzay below:

'For now, I do not want to run fowl of whatever the court ethics are. From my understanding of issues, once a matter is in court, every party strives as much as possible to refrain from making comments on such matters or anything relating to it.

'I am surprised that Project Alert or whatever they call themselves and the person who ran away from her matrimonial home months back, and who after a few months, came with thugs, hefty looking men in a black unregistered car, beat up my cousin and injured her on her way back from picking the kids from school and forcefully adopted my children, and then went to court after doing that, can now run to the press and post so many statements to tarnish my image on the internet.

'I am not ready to afford them the opportunity for cheap publicity which I am sure is what they are looking for. A good lawyer should fight his case in court and not on pages of newspapers. I am happy with some of the responses they are getting on the net.

Minister slams presidential panel on police reforms

Minister of Police Affairs, Navy Capt. Caleb Olubolade (retd.), on Wednesday criticised severely the Parry Osayande-led Presidential Committee on the Reorganisation of the Nigeria Police for advocating the scrapping of his ministry.
Olubolade said the committee derailed by going beyond its assignment. Part of the committee’s recommendations is that the Ministry of Police Affairs, currently under the watch of Olubolade, be scraped.
In an interview with State House correspondents shortly after the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting, the police affairs minister said the assignment given to the committee by President Goodluck Jonathan was to look at how the police could be reorganised to meet modern challenges, adding that anything outside that terms of reference amounted to derailment.
He said, “Mr. President set up a committee led by Parry Osayande to reorganise the police. That committee should not be misconstrued or should not be confused with the earlier committee set up by the President to reorganise the ministries and restructure ministries and parastatals.
“What happened yesterday (Tuesday) was that this committee headed by Parry Osayande submitted its report to the President. Incidentally, in the same vein, the retired Inspectors-General of Police paid a visit to the President.
“Somehow it got into the limelight that this issue of scrapping the Ministry of Police Affairs became an issue. But the assignment given to that panel was to look at how the police can be professionalised and reorganised.
“Usually, when an assignment like this is given, one must look at the subject. The subject is to reorganise the police and any issue discussed outside that can be termed to be a derail.”
The minister also frowned on Osayande’s disclosure of the content of his committee’s report when the government had not taken a decision on the recommendations. He said such was capable of misleading the public.

“In fact, the police have gone ahead to arrest one David Ugolor, who is alleged to have been implicated as the sponsor of the murder. In order to clear the position of the Edo State Government, we wish to note the following:

Jonathan wants five gold medals from Rio Olympics – Abdullahi

Minister of Sports, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi
The Minister of Sports and Chairman, National Sports Commission, Bolaji Abdullahi, has revealed that President Goodluck Jonathan is targeting five gold medals from Rio 2016 Olympics despite the abysmal failure of Team Nigeria at London 2012 Olympics.
Nigeria finished the London Games as one the worst teams, failing to win any medal but Abdullahi said on Channels Television on Wednesday that Jonathan wants an early preparation for the next Games and expects no fewer than five golds.
“Mr. President believes if we start to work now we can win five gold medals in Rio in 2016. If we start to work towards that target, we may or may not meet it, but we must begin now to work towards it and believe it is possible,” Abdullahi said.

‘NNPC will meet gas demand for power generation’

Alison-Madueke

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation will increase gas supply to power plants in the country in the next four weeks to boost electricity supply, the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, has said.

The minister, who said this in Abuja during a briefing, added that the emergency plan unveiled in the gas sector few months ago had begun to yield results.

It is meant to increase gas supply to the grid in three tranches over the 12-month emergency period.

Britain threatens to invade Ecuador’s London embassy to arrest WikiLeaks founder

The British government has threatened to invade the Embassy of Ecuador in London and arrest WikiLeaders founder Julian Assange, who is seeking political asylum there.
The dramatic development came two months after Assange suddenly walked into the embassy in a bid to avoid being extradited to Sweden where he faces allegations of sexual assault.
Ecuador’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ricardo Patino, released details of a letter he said was delivered through a British embassy official in Quito, and said that the Ecuadorian government would announce on Thursday whether it would give Assange asylum, telegraph.co.uk reports.
The letter said, “You need to be aware that there is a legal base in the UK, the Diplomatic and Consular Premises Act 1987, that would allow us to take actions in order to arrest Mr Assange in the current premises of the Embassy.
“We sincerely hope that we do not reach that point, but if you are not capable of resolving this matter of Mr Assange’s presence in your premises, this is an open option for us.”
Patino said, “Today we received from the United Kingdom an express threat, in writing, that they might storm our embassy in London if we don’t hand over Julian Assange”
He said the letter was “improper of a democratic, civilized and rule abiding country.
“If the measure announced in the British official communication is enacted, it will be interpreted by Ecuador as an unacceptable, unfriendly and hostile act and as an attempt against our sovereignty. It would force us to respond,” he said.
“We are not a British colony.
A spokeswoman for the Foreign office said Britain remained “determined” to extradite Assange to Sweden.
“We have an obligation to extradite Mr Assange and it is only right that we give Ecuador the full picture.

Niger hold Eagles to 0-0 draw

keshi.jpg
Nigeria were on Wednesday held to a 0-0 draw by Niger in a friendly match to prepare both sides for 2013 Nations Cup qualifiers in September.
The entertaining encounter played at the 50,000-capacity Stade General Seyni Kountche in Niamey, which was half-filled, saw both sides give their best with Nigeria having the edge in a match that saw three yellow cards to the visitors and one to the hosts.
The Nigerian culprits were Solomon Kwambe, Solomon Jabason and Sani Sanusi while Niger hitman Kalilou Dawouda was also booked for rough play.
Niger started the better side when after only five minutes Boubacar Talatou tried to chip past goalkeeper and skipper Chigozie Agbim.
The Warri Wolves man slipped, picked himself up and went for the save, which resulted in him hitting his shoulder against the woodwork.
The Nigerian bench looked worried, but after the medics attended to him, he was back to his feet but needed additional attention after the game.

Why we are holding talks with Boko Haram – FG

Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku
The Federal Government on Wednesday said it accepted to hold dialogue with the violent Islamic sect, Boko Haram, in order to arrest insecurity in the country as soon as possible.
“We have accepted dialogue as a way of bringing the (insecurity) situation to an end as quickly as possible. We have always called on those engaging in violence to stop because violence can’t solve any problem. So we welcome the decision to dialogue,” Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, told journalists in Abuja.
The Christian Association of Nigeria has, however, warned that the government should not hold dialogue with the sect on its own terms.
Though CAN said it was ready to support any step aimed at curbing the sect’s insurgency, it opposed the government-Boko Haram talks if they centred on the condition to Islamise of the country.
The sect’s leader, Abubakar Shekau, was reportedly quoted to have said in a video footage that President Goodluck Jonathan should convert to Islam or resign from office.

INVESTIGATIONS by The PUNCH have revealed that the Federal Government is in a dilemma about the probe of the Farouk Lawan-Femi Otedola $620,000 bribery scandal. Our correspondents learnt that both Lawan and Otedola were recommended for prosecution by some legal minds in the Ministry of Justice. The ministry officials were said to have based their recommendation on the report of the Police Special Task Force that investigated the scandal.
A member of the Police Special Task Force, who pleaded anonymity, confided in one of our correspondents that that the report of the STF did not exonerate Otedola.

Stella Dimoko-Korkus Hilarious Interview With Tonto Dikeh

Stella Dimoko-Korkus is a reporter with Encomium magazine.

Stella: You shot the movie, My Life, My Damage, with Uche Jombo; we are yet to see the movie but it is alleged that the drug addict role you played in the movie is your true life character: Tonto: Here we go again. I am an actor for Christ sake. And I'm supposed to make my audience believe whatever role I interpret. If any past role I have done has made anyone put a tag on me as Tonto a person, that's their problem to deal with not mine. If they say I got the role because I am drugs why are you calling me? Why don't you call the person who saw me fit enough to interpret the role? My damage is a movie where I interpret the role of someone who got high on drugs. Acting like a drug addict is easy. Please let them say, I am not going to respond to anyone on this issue again.

Stella: The tattoo of your face on your back was done during the movie shoot in America. Drugs and tattoo sometimes go together. Have you gone for therapy to solve this problem? Tonto: I don't understand these questions you are asking. Have you gone to therapy for poke nosing into people's affairs? I am sure you would call it a day job. That's fine. I had my back tattooed because I always wanted to do so and during the movie shoot, we figured we could put the scene into the movie. Like you said, drug and tattoo sometimes go together and we thought it was perfect for the movie.

Stella: I will ignore the insult. From the synopsis of the movie, your character did not end up well. Are you not worried that you might end up like this in real life if you continue with the drug abuse? Tonto kinda ignores this question...

Tonto: Yes, the character I played ended up with HIV/AIDS and that's a good lesson for people who abuse sex and drugs without protection. The movie is a warning to young people living life on the fast lane because they can afford it. The consequences are very serious and in most cases, the damage done cannot be undone.

I don't mean to be rude but if someone calls me again attaching a movie role to Tonto as a person, I will not give any response and I won't be nice. It's a pity that people take their eyes off the film and begin to put question mark on the actor's personal life. People should focus on the character and not me. Thank you all the same for asking me, albeit that I find these questions totally demeaning and insulting on my person. Have a nice day.

(CNN) — Evangelist Billy Graham was released from the hospital Tuesday after a two-day stay and returned to his North Carolina home, Mission Hospital said.
Pulmonologist Daniel Fertel said doctors caught his bronchitis early, a vital factor in his quick recovery.
“Despite this illness he remains remarkably healthy for a 93-year-old man,” the doctor said in a news release issued by the hospital.
Graham was admitted to the hospital in the western North Carolina city of Asheville early Sunday morning.
Graham said he received “exceptional care” during his stay.
“I am also grateful for the prayers and letters I received from people across the country and around the world during my short stay,” Graham said in the news release. “Such an outpouring of love and support is always a blessing but was especially appreciated during my hospitalization.”
He was hospitalized with pneumonia last November, six months after being admitted to a hospital for the same condition. Since then, he has remained “in good overall health … though he continues to remain at home due to age-related conditions,” according to the hospital and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.
Graham, a resident of Montreat, about 18 miles east of Asheville, has provided counsel to generations of U.S. presidents, beginning with Harry S. Truman, and is the founder of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.

N100bn scam: Don’t celebrate yet, EFCC tells Odili

Indications emerged yesterday that the perpetual injunction, obtained by the former Rivers State Governor, Dr. Peter Odili, secured from a Federal High Court against his prosecution over alleged diversion of over N100 billion during his eight-year tenure, might amount to a pyrrhic victory.
Findings by Vanguard revealed that contrary to report of discontinuation, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, is pressing ahead with the case, with a view to bringing the former governor to book.
A source said yesterday that the EFCC was more determined to get the perpetual injunction against the commission lifted so that Odili and his officials could be made to account for the public funds which they allegedly diverted during their stay in office.
It will be recalled that based on petitions from individuals and groups in Rivers State, the EFCC had carried out investigations into the management of Rivers State resources in the eight years that Odili held sway and released a verdict towards the end of 2006, detailing how the state’s funds amounting to over N100 billion were diverted.

My husband supports my return to acting 100% - Dakore Akande

"I want to use this medium to clear the air. I don't know why they went ahead to say because I became a wife my career was over. That is a very archaic way of thinking. Women these day and age work. We have responsibilities. But I didn't say anything because everything one says about me and I react, I won't have time to do anything with my life. I am an actor but having a family is more important to me, and I am very sure my fans appreciate that. I considered my fans and I said to myself when my daughter is old enough, I would come back to the movie industry. She's almost one now. I am back to acting and my husband supports me returning to it 100%. If he was not supporting me, I would not be doing it." - Dakore Egbuson Akande

29 year old Hadiza told me she packed out of her husband's house on April 17th after being badly battered the day before by Zaaki. She was able to leave with two of her children, but the third one, her eldest child, is still living at home.

She said he had been battering her for years, sometimes he would beat her so much she would faint, but her family kept telling her to go back to him for the sake of their children. She said she left him twice last year but returned to him after much pressure from family and friends. But when the battery continued, she made up her mind to end her marriage for good because she didn't want to be another dead wife.

Hadiza was a housewife, so since leaving her husband she has been under the care of an NGO that takes care of battered women. They've given her and her children shelter and are taken up her case.

88 babies born in one week at RCCG 60th convention

A total of 88 babies were born during the just-concluded seven-day 60th convention of The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), themed “Come Up Higher,” which ended last Sunday.
General Overseer of the church, Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, whose divine appointment was reaffirmed by the Governing Council of the church during the farewell service held on Sunday, made the announcement, saying that out of the 88 babies, 44 were boys and girls 44, as of 7.30 a.m on Sunday.
Meanwhile, to defuse the rumour making the round that Pastor Adeboye, who clocked 70 in March, was contemplating resignation from the headship of the mission, the Governing Council of the mission, through one of its elders last Sunday,
passed a vote of confidence on the General Overseer of the church.
Good leadership and prosperity are eluding African nations, according to the elder, because the people usually reject the will of God in selecting their leaders, saying that was not the case in RCCG.
“In RCCG, God has given us a leader who obeys Him. All machinations to plunge the church into leadership crisis will not stand.

Strike paralyses academic activities at Rivers Varsity

The strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Rivers State University of Science and Technology chapter, has paralysed academic activities at the institution.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that lecturers in the university embarked on the strike to protest alleged refusal of the State Government to rescind its decision on the re-appointment of Prof. Barineme Fakae as Vice Chancellor of the university.
The union claimed that there was pressure on Gov. Chibuike Amaechi to circumvent due process in the appointment of the vice chancellor.
The union had earlier recommended that Amaechi should appoint a vice chancellor from the best three candidates who emerged during the screening exercise.
A NAN correspondent who visited the university reports that academic activities had been halted with students loitering around the campus.
Some students who spoke to NAN, decried the spate of strikes by the lecturers.
