ACN, Presidency clash over Jonathan’s Lagos visit today

Fashola jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan’s scheduled visit to Lagos today has sparked  a war of words between the Action Congress of Nigeria and the Presidency.
Jonathan is expected to arrive  in Lagos on Thursday (today) en route  to Ibafo in Ogun State where he will  inaugurate WEMPCO’s  Cold Roll Steel Plant.
But  the ACN  said on Wednesday that  the visit  was primarily aimed at  scuttling  its national convention today  at the Onikan Stadium, Lagos.  The  Presidency however described the allegation as baseless and another in the series of “wolf crying” that has become the ACN trait.
The party, in a letter to the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), said Jonathan’s visit might lead to the closure of roads in  the city,  thus preventing its supporters across the country from coming for the convention.

My Son Has Right To Contest Adamawa Guber Seat – Tukur

PDP-National-Chairman-Dr-Bamanga-Tukur

National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur yesterday said there was no crime in his son aspiring to the office of the governor of his home state, Adamawa.
This is even as he described the dreaded Islamic sect, Boko Haram as “evil”, pointing out that Nigerians need to join hands with government to end the menace posed by the sect.
Speaking in Abuja, the PDP boss explained that it was wrong for people to insinuate that it was morally wrong for his son to be interested in the state’s job, pointing out that anybody who is qualified to any office had the right to aspire to such an office, irrespective of whether the person is “Dr. Bamanga Tukur’s son of not”.
“My son was in politics before I became the chairman of PDP.  He was in the House of Representatives before I became the chairman.  I leave my son to be what he wants to be.
“Remember he had aspired to the office before now, so, it is not an office he just woke up and began to nurse the ambition to hold. I cheer him up; if he is looking for leadership, why not?” he said.

Cardinal John Onaiyekan

THE Federal Government has  resolved  to constitute a  fresh committee that will be saddled with the responsibility of administering  the  amnesty being planned  for members of the violent Islamic sect, Boko Haram.
The PUNCH learnt that the  decision to constitute the new committee  was taken at a meeting President Goodluck Jonathan had with security chiefs on Tuesday  on the  lingering  insecurity in parts of the country.

The technical commitee which was constituted  two weeks ago  presented its report during the Tuesday meeting which held just as the Christian Association of Nigeria  said  that amnesty was a  recipe for confusion in the country.

Dangote to build $8bn oil refinery in Nigeria

Dangote

Africa’s richest man, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, plans to invest up to $8bn to build a Nigerian oil refinery with a capacity of around 400,000 barrels a day by late 2016, the tycoon told Reuters on Tuesday.
This will almost double Nigeria’s current refining capacity.
“This will really help not only Nigeria but sub-Saharan Africa. There has not been a new refinery for a long time in sub-Saharan Africa,” Dangote said in a telephone interview.
The country currently has the capacity to produce some 445,000 barrels per day among four refineries, but they operate well below that owing to decades of mismanagement and corruption in Africa’s leading energy producer.
Nigeria, the continent’s second-biggest economy, relies on subsidised imports for 80 per cent of its fuel needs.

Leave Me Out Of 2015 Race, President Jonathan Begs

Goodluck-Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan has begged to be left alone to focus on delivering on his political promises to Nigerians, instead of being drawn into alleged 2015 moves.
In a statement today, his spokesman, Dr. Reuben Abati, refuted a newspaper report that a 21-member committee has been set up towards Jonathan’s 2015 campaign, saying that Mr. Jonathan has not yet taken a decision on whether or not he will seek re-election in 2015 and has therefore not mandated any individual, committee or organisation to start working on his behalf for the 2015 elections.
“President Jonathan’s stated wish to be left alone to focus on delivering on his promise of good governance and national transformation without unnecessary distractions should be respected,” the statement said.
“Political jobbers and their collaborators in the media should stop heating up the polity with baseless speculations and falsehoods revolving around imaginary plans and schemes by the Presidency for the 2015 elections.”
It will be recalled that at the presentation of the “PDP Women-In-Power 2013 Calendar” in Abuja on February 21, the PDP National Women’s Leader and member of the National Working Committee (NWC), Mrs. Kema Chikwe, openly said that Mr. Jonathan would return as President in 2015.
“We are even more confident that when President Goodluck Jonathan returns in 2015, women would be talking about 50 per cent and not 35 per cent,” she said.  “As we give him unequivocal, undiluted, unresolved and unlimited support and as we march with him to 2015, PDP women will reach the promised land,” she said.

Boko Haram: FG tasks Northern leaders

Emirs-north

ABUJA—The Federal Government, Tuesday, asked Northern leaders to take a cue from the Niger Delta leaders who went to the creeks at the height of insecurity in the region to persuade militants to drop their arms and accept the amnesty programme.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mr. Labaru Maku, gave this challenge at a briefing on the forthcoming stakeholders’ conference and maiden meeting of the council on Niger Delta in Uyo, adding that northern leaders have vital roles to play in halting insecurity occasioned by activities of Boko Haram in the region.
He said the relative peace in the Niger Delta today was realised because some leaders in the region risked their lives to go to the creeks, pointing out that peace could be realised in the north if the leaders meet members of the Boko Haram to capitalise on the current dialogue and amnesty offer by the government.
Noting that the amnesty programme in the Niger Delta did not come easily, Maku further tasked the leaders to put in more efforts to ensure that peace prevail in the north.
