Five papal things Benedict gives up in retirement

Pope Benedict XVI
Since the surprise announcement that Pope Benedict XVI was retiring — set for 8 pm on Thursday — details have slowly emerged about what sort of life the former pontiff will live after his time as head of the Catholic Church is over.
It’s been 600 years since the last pope stepped down so it wasn’t clear what Benedict would do after his resignation. In the immediate aftermath of the announcement, on February 11, some even wondered what you call a retired pope.
On Tuesday, the Vatican clarified the issue by announcing that Benedict will keep his papal name, instead of reverting to Joseph Ratzinger, and will be referred to as “pope emeritus.” He will also keep the title of “His Holiness,” but not the other one: Bishop of Rome.
Vatican spokesman, Rev. Federico Lombardi, said that Benedict himself made the decision in consultation with others.
However, the retiring pope will also have to give up a number of his ecclesiastical goods, including many that are steeped in the history and symbolism of the church such as his papal ring and red shoes.
Here is a look at five items Benedict will be giving up when he enters retirement.

'President Jonathan is eligible to run in 2015' - Abuja High Court

An Abuja High Court  ruled that President Jonathan is eligible to contest in the 2015 presidential election, if he wants to. A lawyer, Mr Cyriacus Njoku had filed a suit challenging the president's eligibility to contest in 2015.

Below is what the presiding judge, Justice Oniyangi, said in his ruling...

"After the death of Umar Yar'Adua, there was no election or bye election, President Jonathan was merely asked to assume the office of the President in line with Doctrine of necessity. He was not elected as the President but was made to assume office by virtue of Yar'Adua's death.
“Having exhausted the late President's tenure, he sought for his party's ticket and ran for the office of the President successfully in 2011 general election. He is therefore currently serving his first tenure of office and if he so wishes, he is eligible to further seek his party's ticket through the party's primary election and to run for office in 2015," , adding that President Jonathan’s tenure as President started in May 29, 2011, when he took the oath of office and not on May 6, 2010, when he assumed office after Umaru Yar’Adua’s demise.

Water is first aid for acid attack

Associate Professor of Burns and Plastic, Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Dr. Idowu Fadeyibi, says acid is the commonest cause of chemical burns in Nigeria.
I’m sure you have treated a lot of acid bath victims. How common are such cases?
We have been having at least 12 admitted acid attack patients every year in the last three years. Sometimes some are not admitted.
Do you ever wonder why it is easy to get acid?
Well, that’s because it’s purchase is not regulated in our society. It is fairly easy for anybody to procure acid and use it for whatever reason. Anybody can go to a battery charger and purchase it without any question about what the person wants to use it for.
In developed nations, chemical burns usually result from accidents but here it is usually as a result of assault.

AFCON 2013: Nigeria yet to receive $1.5m prize money from CAF

Reports say the Confederation of African Football (CAF) is yet to release the cash award to the Super Eagles of Nigeria, winners of the 2013 African Cup of Nations.
As earlier announced by CAF, a prize money $1.5M (N238m) was to be awarded to the winners of AFCON 2013. Nigeria defeated Burkina Faso on February 10, winning the competition.
And to confirm this, CAF openly handed the Super Eagles a dummy cheque, indicating the total cash prize due to the winners. So far, the Nigeria Football Federation says that’s the only cheque they have in their possession.
Dr. Shehu Adamu, an NFF board member confirmed this to THISDAY on Monday night that the ‘Glasshouse’ was yet to receive the prize money from CAF two weeks after the competition.
We have not received any alert from CAF regarding the Africa Cup of Nations prize money. We have sent our account number to them and the money is yet to hit the account. We are still waiting for them to pay the money’, Adamu said.
Other reports say CAF is ‘playing hide and seek’ by delaying the prize money redemption as a strategy to make Nigeria pay the disputed TV rights fee of 8.5m euros (over N1 billion) which CAF President Issa Hayatou claimed Nigeria was owing to the confederation over the broadcast of the Africa Cup of Nations.
The refusal of Nigeria to pay the huge rights fees demanded by CAF agents, resulted in the non-telecast of the Africa Cup of Nations matches on local television stations, prompting Nigerians to watch the matches on pay per view television.
An email sent to CAF had not be replied as at the time of this report.

Doris Simeon - "I would ask my Mother why she didn’t marry somebody like Dangote"

On growing up: It was fun. It was just the typical Nigerian child growing up. We were told not to watch TV but read our books. During my time, parents wanted their children to be doctors and lawyers and engineers. But fortunately, my parents were free minded. I told them I wanted to be a news caster or a radio presenter. I used to watch TV a lot. There was a day my mother beat me black and blue. She sent me on an errand and I went and got the wrong thing because I was watching Indian movie in my neighbour’s place.

'Those betraying GEJ and PDP are like Judas who betrayed Jesus'- Akpabio

"PDP is the only party with national spread and Nigerians have come to accept it. But when there is an implosion, when you have more Judases than disciples. The Judases are more than disciples now. We have to cleanse the system of Judases to support Mr. President. Where there is treachery, where there are more Judases than you have disciples, we want to have good disciples, we know that even in Christendom when Jesus Christ have 12 disciples, there was one Judas, but if the Judas were up to nine, then, Jesus could have been in trouble, the gospel would have been in trouble today." - Governor Godswill Akpabio, Akwa Ibom State.

el-rufai

LAGOS — FORMER Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai has said that attacks on him following his newly published book, would not change the message of the  book, saying the contents were facts that happened.
He said this against the backdrop of criticisms from some former public office holders, who described the contents of the book as misleading.
El-Rufai, who said this, yesterday, in Lagos at the public presentation of the book entitled: ‘The Accidental Public Servant’, disclosed that the concluding part of the book would soon be published.
His words: ‘’I hope this book will inspire others to write books because the country deserves to know how the government works and worked.
“I did not write about their girlfriends, I only wrote about what happened in government and my experience.  And this is what I think we should be doing in this country.
“They have been attacking me on the issues in the book, but they will not change anything in the book because those are things that happened.”
Also speaking at the event,Pastor Tunde Bakare of Latter Rain Assembly, challenged those, who are uncomfortable with the book to write theirs, adding that Nigerians need the book to fix all that is wrong with the nation.

Secrecy Surrounding Signed Budget Sparks Controversy

Jonathan budget

The secrecy surrounding the “signing” into law of the 2013 Appropriation Act by President Goodluck Jonathan is sparking concerns across the country.
Analysts believe that, technically, no budget has been signed since some conditions were attached and the document sent back to the National Assembly for alteration. That the Federal Ministry of Finance also failed to provide a breakdown of the “signed” budget also points to the fact that the “signing” was merely cosmetic. The president signed the budget in secret, defying the known tradition of previous years when it was done in full public glare, fuelling suspicion that the budget may not have been signed.

FA Cup – Chelsea oust Middlesbrough to set up United clash

FA Cup fifth round, The Riverside – Middlesbrough 0 Chelsea 2 (Ramires 51, Moses 73)
Second-half strikes from Ramires and Victor Moses saw an under-strength Chelsea beat Middlesbrough 2-0 in their FA Cup fifth-round match at The Riverside.
The Premier League club field a weakened side from that which lost 2-0 at Manchester City at the weekend, and it showed as they served up a poor example for a side of their means in a dire first half.
Chelsea improved in the second period though, as Ramires fired in a curler to open the scoring, while Moses added a second after a delightful one-two between Oscar and Eden Hazard.
The Blues now face runaway Premier League leaders Manchester United at Old Trafford on March 10 for a place in the semi-finals.
Rafael Benitez will be pleased with the victory, but the overall performance was not impressive against a Boro side in Championship freefall after a promising start to the season.
A turgid first half saw Chelsea struggle to string two passes together, unsurprising given they had made eight changes from the weekend.
Boro, meanwhile, had more possession but have serious injury problems of their own and were equally disjointed, with their fitness woes worsening after Andre Bikey pulled a hamstring midway through the half.
The hosts did have the better chances though, Scott McDonald heading wide from an excellent Nicky Bailey cross, and Mustapha Carayol almost beating a nervy Petr Cech with a bouncing drive.
That was more than could be said for Chelsea who, with no Juan Mata or Frank Lampard, were relying on Fernando Torres and Moses to combine well: they did not, and the Blues’ best effort was an Oscar cross-shot that landed just past the far post.
There was a bit more about Chelsea as the second half got underway, the visitors more direct and enthusiastic in their attacking approach.
The renewed vigour paid early dividends as Ramires found the back of the net with a curling effort that may well have taken a vital deflection off Torres as it whistled into the top right.
The chance was initially created by Oscar’s fantastic run and cross from the right, and the Brazilian continued to wreak havoc as he filled the space on the wing that had been vacated by Moses, who was operating more centrally.
Indeed, Chelsea were a far better proposition now, as Torres saw a vicious drive deflected just over the bar, while Ramires mis-kicked one effort and had another thunderbolt blocked.
Boro responded by introducing Ishmael Miller into the mix, and the match promptly disintegrated back into the slug-fest of the first half.
But a moment of brilliance cemented Chelsea’s lead as, not long after coming on as a substitute, Hazard went on a driving run before exchanging a one-two with Oscar, whose marvellous backheel sent the Belgian clean through. Unselfishly, Hazard rolled the ball to Moses, who finished easily.
Oscar almost added a third with a solo run and low drive wide, but Chelsea eased off a touch in the latter stages, Boro twice going close as Seb Hines put a header just wide and Miller volleyed just over when both should have made Cech work.
Miller had a fierce drive tipped over by Cech in the final minute of the 90, but was all too late for Tony Mowbray’s men though, as Chelsea comfortably sealed their progress.
