Police quiz, detain Lawan

Farouk Lawan
EMBATTLED Chairman of the fuel subsidy probe panel in the House of Representatives, Farouk Lawan, on Thursday surrendered himself to police for interrogation over the $620,000 bribe he had confessed to receiving from an oil marketer, Femi Otedola.
The lawmaker was subsequently interrogated and detained along with the Clerk of his committee, Boniface Emenalo.
Lawan arrived at the office of the police Special Task Force at the Louis Edet House Force headquarters about 4pm, in company with  Emenalo and five lawyers.
The lawmaker was detained briefly before he was taken to the interrogation room where detectives, led by the Commissioner of Police in charge of the STF, Ali Ahmadu, quizzed him four several hours.
As of the time of filing this report, the diminutive legislator was still undergoing questioning.
The police on Wednesday had hinted that they would declare the lawmaker wanted if he refused to give himself up for interrogation on the bribery scandal
Otedoda had claimed that Lawan demanded and received the money, being part of a $3m bribe deal, in order to remove his Zenon Oil from the list of those indicted in a N1.7trn subsidy rot.
The businessman said Lawan collected $500,000 in two tranches of $250,000 while he sent Emenalo to collect $120,000 at a later date.
However, on Monday Lawan, who had denied receiving the bribe, confessed to have received the bribe but that he only did so to expose Otedola.

I did not mastermind bribery scandal – Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan
President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday said there was no truth in widespread insinuation that his government was orchestrating the $620,000 bribery scandal involving the Chairman of the House of Representatives’ ad hoc committee on the fuel subsidy, Mr. Farouk Lawan, and an oil businessman, Mr. Femi Otedola.
Jonathan said this in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, in Abuja.
The President’s aide described the insinuation that the scandal was a ploy by Jonathan and the executive arm of government to unseat the leadership of the House as “lame, diversionary, totally false and baseless.”
Abati also told our correspondent in an exclusive interview that despite the bribery scandal, Jonathan would not stop the action he had already initiated on the implementation of the report of the committee.
The President said notwithstanding the development on the scandal, his directive to the Attorney-General of the Federation, Mr. Mohammed Adoke (SAN), on the report of the probe committee, as adopted by the House, had not changed.

NFF bars journalists, Yobo ruled out

SUPER Eagles skipper, Joseph Yobo
Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi, ruled Joseph Yobo out of the second leg of the 2013 Africa Nations Cup qualifier against Rwanda on Saturday in Calabar as the visitors hit the venue on Thursday.
The Amavubi arrived at the Margret Ekpo International Airport and proceeded to the Channel View Hotel where accommodation had already been reserved for them. But attempts by Journalists to speak with the team’s coach Milutin Sredojovic were repeatedly blocked by Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme, the Nigeria Football Federation’s director of technical.
Sredojovic explained to journalists that he needed clearance from the NFF officials led by Ikpeme. Officials of the Rwandan FA, who accompanied the team had also assured journalists that the team were disposed to talk to the media but Ikpeme rudely said that it was not possible without clearance from him.
Apart from physically blocking journalists from carrying out their duties, he made uncomplimentary remarks.

India invites Eagles for Nehru Cup

Super Eagles coach, Keshi
The All India Football Federation has invited the Super Eagles to feature in a six-nation Nehru Cup competition scheduled to hold in New Delhi between August 16 and 26.
The 15th edition of the tournament is organised as part of All India Football Federation’s platinum jubilee celebrations and is expected to Cost Rica and Jordan.
AIFF general secretary Kushal Das told The Telegraph, “We haven’t finalised yet whether the Nehru Cup would be a five-team or six-team affair. But some high profile teams would be involved. While Nigeria have shown keen interest, we are also in talks with Jordan, Thailand, Malaysia, Costa Rica and Afghanistan. A clear picture should emerge in the next couple of weeks.”
Uruguay were the champions of the maiden edition when it began in 1982 but hosts India are the defending champions after beating Syria in the final in 2009.
An official of the Nigeria Football Federation confirmed on Wednesday that Nigeria were in talks with the AIFF on the competition but added nothing had been concluded.

Lagos issues ultimatum to Danfo, other commercial drivers

A park in Lagos
The Lagos State Government has given 48-hour ultimatum to commercial bus operators in Ikorodu and its environs, especially those indiscriminately discharging and loading passengers at the town’s roundabout to move to the designated motor park at Sabo area of the town or face the wrath of the law.
A statement by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority said the move was aimed at ensuring the safety of lives and free flow of traffic in the area.
The statement indicated that the ultimatum would take effect from Friday (today).
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Babatunde Edu, was said to have issued the order during a meeting jointly organised by the agency and the Lagos State Task Force on Environmental and other Special Offences for the National Union of Road Transport Workers and the Road Transport Employees Association of Nigeria at Alausa, Ikeja.
He said, “Commercial bus operators are fond of flouting traffic rules and regulations. They always drive in direction prohibited by the law and have turned every nook and cranny of Ikorodu into parks rather than using the dedicated parks allocated to them.
“This directive became necessary in order to curb the excesses of the commercial drivers and street urchins who have narrowed the road to suit their undesirable acts, thereby causing heavy traffic and posing a serious security threat to the people.”

Plane crash: Investigators suspect contaminated fuel

Dana-plane-crash-site-360x239[1]
Investigators from Nigeria’s Accident Investigation Bureau and the United States National Transportation Safety Board are focusing their investigations on the samples of aviation fuel collected from the Boeing MD-83 planes belonging to Dana Air.
Our correspondent gathered that the accident investigators on Tuesday commenced multiple tests on samples of aviation fuel, also known as Jet A1 fuel, collected from Dana planes parked at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Terminal Two, Lagos.
The development, it was gathered, was based on the belief that the dual engine failure experienced by the ill-fated Dana plane, which crashed into residential buildings in Iju-Ishaga area of Lagos and killed over 145 people, might have been caused by contaminated fuel. According to experts, a fuel is said to be contaminated when it contains some amount of water or sediments.
The investigators were said to be focusing on the samples of the fuel in the planes because majority of past cases of dual engine failure in the global aviation industry had been discovered to have been caused by fuel supply issues.

Italy, Croatia settle for draw

Pirlo
Mario Mandzukic’s goal saw Croatia come from behind to force a 1-1 draw with Italy in Group C of Euro 2012 on Thursday.
Italy opened the scoring in Poznan through an excellent free-kick from Juventus midfielder Andrea Pirlo, who beat Stipe Pletikosa at the goalkeeper’s near post six minutes before half-time.
It took Slaven Bilic’s side until the 71st minute to force the equaliser, when Mandzukic collected Ivan Strinic’s cross at the back post, before netting via a deflection off the upright.
Italy showed their intent early on by looking to attack their opponents on the break – Christian Maggio, Pirlo and Antonio Cassano all proving important outlets.
Mario Balotelli enjoyed the first sight of goal inside the opening three minutes, with his shot from the edge of the box whistling just wide of the target.

Return to God - DAILY DEVOTIONAL

TEXT: LAMENTATIONS 3:1-21

Key  Verse: “This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope” (Lamentations 3:21).
One of the terrible consequences of living in sin is that the Almighty God will not answer the prayer of the sinner. Jeremiah was grieved at the sin of the nation and wanted them to repent. Prayer without repentance from sin is like mocking God. Forgiveness must be preceded by genuine repentance and a complete turnaround.
God is merciful and compassionate. Jeremiah knew that God’s heart would be touched to show mercy if His people turned to Him in full repentance. This knowledge gave him hope. “This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope”. Hope is the vehicle that drives the sinner’s desire for repentance and the believer’s commitment and steadfastness.
Although God is merciful, He also punishes those who disobey Him. He does not spare the rod. On several occasions He turned His back against Israel and they suffered defeat in the hands of their enemies. The frequent disobedience of the children of Israel and their habitual murmuring against God resulted in the death of many of those who joyfully left Egypt for Canaan land.
God has not changed: He still punishes sinners today.
Those who suffer all manner of afflictions need to re-examine themselves to make sure it is not as a result of abandoning God’s ways that they are going through such. Though individuals and nations act as if there is no more punishment for sins here and here after, God is immutable and cannot change His word and consequences for sin.
There is hope of forgiveness and cleansing because of God’s merciful and compassionate disposition. Wait no longer, repent now and come to Him. He will forgive and abundantly pardon.

Thought for the Day:
A broken and contrite heart God will not despise.

Who Killed This 11-Year-Old Girl And Left Her Body To Decompose?

At Obosi, a community in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, uncertainty currently rules the air, following the mysterious circumstances surrounding the death of an 11 year old girl, Chioma, in Lagos early in the year. Chioma Menkiti, the daughter of Chief Michael Menkiti, an octogenarian, was living with somebody in Lagos where she was reported dead.

Daily Sun gathered that the deceased’s mother, Mrs. Chinwe Menkiti, is the second wife of Pa Menkiti. He had remarried after the death of his first wife. Trouble started in January when Ifeyinwa, the eldest daughter in the family and a half-sister to the deceased, pleaded with her father to allow Chioma to live with her friend in Lagos. She had argued that the girl would get better education and good upbringing with her friend in Lagos. The old man obliged and the little girl travelled.

The deceased was reportedly taken to the Iyana Ejigbo home of Ifeyinwa’s friend, Ngozi (other names withheld by us). Chioma was to serve as a maid to Ngozi, a mother of six. But Ifeyinwa said her friend never allowed her to see how the little girl was faring.

“At a time, I called Ngozi to tell her that I would be coming to her place so that I would use the opportunity to know how my little sister was doing, because somebody that just came from the village would definitely have some problem acclimatizing to life in the city, but Ngozi told me that her family would be going somewhere with Chioma on holidays and that I should wait until they returned,” Ifeyinwa said.

She said she tried visiting her friend again, but received a similar message. This time, she was told that Ngozi’s children, including the deceased, went to stay with her brother in another part of Lagos. “Ngozi also told me that she would call me whenever her children returned. She assured me that Chioma was doing well, that she was coping well with her children. I relaxed since we don’t live in the same area in Lagos,” she said.

Nanny Watched As 5-Year Old Girl Was Raped At Bolingo Hotel, Mom Alleges

The rape of a five-year-old girl is generating the interest of the attorney general of the federation and minister of justice, Muhammed Bello Adoke (SAN), who on Wednesday applied to a Wuse Magistrate Court to take charge of its prosecution from the Police.

Canadian born Eliana Melekwe was allegedly raped at Bolingo Hotel by a certain Godwin Okon, a cleaner in the hotel.

Mr. Ejike Orji, a lawyer from the AGF’s chambers, made an oral application to the court to convey the AGF’s interest in taking over the matter because it involved a foreign citizen.

However, counsel to the accused, Suleiman Usman, opposed the application, arguing that the AGF could not takeover a criminal case without the fiat of an attorney general of the state, taking Abuja to possess the status of a state.

NBTS asks FG to recognise blood donors

The National Blood Transfusion Service has called on the Federal Government and other well-meaning Nigerians to recognise the contribution of blood donors toward saving the lives of Nigerians through blood donation.
Head, NBTS Donor Care,
Mrs Helen Goyo, made this appeal in an interview with The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Thursday.
NAN reports that the service commenced the activities commemorating the celebration of the 2012 World Blood Donor Day on June 14 from June 11.
“These donors voluntarily donate their blood to help save lives in the country.
“So if you cannot donate blood you can help support the government in appreciating these unsung heroes, who have saved lives by contributing donor items not necessarily monetary,” she said.
Goyo told NAN that there was no monetary attachment to blood donation, which was why it was voluntary.
She, however, said that the donors were only given donor appreciation items like face caps, T-shirts, ball pens, writing pads and other gift items.
“When the donor comes, we do a mini-medical checkup, the blood pressure, hemoglobin level and the weight.
“After successfully donating blood, we give them water and a malt drink, to help replace the fluid that has been lost.
“If it so happens that they have not eaten before the stipulated four hours before coming to donate blood, we give them food to eat before they donate blood.”
NAN spoke to one of the blood donors, Mr. Nathan John, 30, who donated blood for the 31st time in eight years.

Football supporters eulogise Yekini, Abiola, Okwaraji

The Chairman, Nigeria Football Supporters Club, Yisau Olatunde, has called on the Confederation of African Football to immortalise the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola and the late Rashidi Yekini.
Olatunde made the call on Thursday in Ibadan in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, on the sidelines of a novelty match to mark the 40-day Fidau prayer for the late Yekini.
Olatunde, who also urged ex-Super Eagles players to come together to honour Abiola and Yekini, noted that both contributed immensely to the growth of football in Nigeria.
The chairman said that great sports administrators like the late Abiola, who was the Pillar of Sports in Africa in his lifetime, should not be forgotten by CAF for his immense contributions to football and the organisation.
He added that great footballers such as Yekini should not also be forgotten by CAF and the Super Eagles for his superb soccer display that had attracted many youths to football.
According to Olatunde, the issue of immortalising Abiola, the acclaimed winner of June 12, 1993 election, has been greatly politicised.
He said that Abiola deserved a federal sports complex to be named after him in Nigeria, to further buttress his contributions to the growth of football in particular and sports generally.
The chairman added that the Federal Government should also accord similar honour to other late sportsmen such as Sam Okwaraji.
He said Yekini and Okwaraji left a legacy of honouring national calls without gratification, adding that they were gentlemen to the core.

Jonathan won’t stay more than eight years –Aide

President Goodluck Jonathan
The Special Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan on Political Matters, Mr. Ahmed Gulak, has said the President won’t stay more than eight years in office.
Gulak said this on Wednesday during a courtesy call on him by the North Central Women Forum led by a former member of the House of Representatives, Mrs. Amina Aliyu.
Gulak also promised to implement the 35 percent affirmative action for women in board appointments.
He said, “Please take the gospel of peace and tolerance irrespective of your religion and ethnicity to them because this country belongs to all of us and God has given us President Goodluck Jonathan. Goodluck Jonathan is the President today but he is not going to stay more than eight years. Nigeria belongs to all of us and not for one person.
“Without the women our democracy will not be complete. I have seen it all during the campaign and Mr. president appreciates the role of women in our democracy and the role the women played in installing this administration. That is the reason the President gave more than 35 per cent in his appointment.”

Very funny, how many years was he supposed to spend before(at most)? hmmnnnnn.....

Get this policeman out of our state, He is a kidnapper - Delta Assembly tells IG Abubakar

A recent development in Delta State has sorely displeased the members of its House of Assembly. It involves the resurfacing in Delta State of Mr. Dickson Adeyemi, a chief superintendent of police (CSP), after he was arrested (and moved out of the state) for his alleged involvement in kidnapping and other related criminal activities.
The legislators, at a house sitting on Tuesday demanded the re-arrest and prosecution of Adeyemi. The motion for Adeyemi’s re-arrest, which was moved by the House deputy majority leader, Hon. Johnson Erijo, was unanimously adopted. The lawmakers said Adeyemi’s continued presence in the state was not only an embarrassment but also a security threat that would scare away foreign investors and urged the relevant authorities to ensure that the allegations against him were thoroughly investigated.
Before his arrest, Adeyemi was the officer-in-charge of the Delta Police Anti-Kidnapping Unit; promoted to crack down on kidnapping activities in the state. However, kidnappings suddenly increased soon after he took the position. Suspicious of his dealings, a crack team from the Force Criminal Investigations Department (FCID) had in April whisked Adeyemi to Abuja for questioning.

FG acqires four Generators for Abuja Airport

On three different occasions this year, the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja has suffered a total blackout. When the latest blackout occurred barely a week after the unfortunate Dana plane crash, some international flights about to land in the airport, were diverted to nearby airports.
Now, the government is taking the initiative to forestall future embarrassment.
Four generators, with a combined capacity of 6,000KVA, have been acquired to supply electricity to the airport. Each of the generators has a capacity of 1,500KVA.
According to the Special Assistant (Media) to the Minister of Aviation, Mr Joel Obi, installation of the generators has commenced. He said the installation work is being handled by Julius Berger Plc. When completed, the special assistant said that it would signal an end to the challenge of lighting at the airport.
With the new acquisitions, the Abuja Airport now has two sets of power backup in addition to the national grid.

$3m bribery SAGA: Farouk c’ttee collected bribes in pounds, dollars – Police

The House of Representatives was, yesterday, recalled from break as the cash for clearance scandal widened with the Police disclosing that other oil industry interests besides Femi Otedola gave bribes in dollars, pounds and local currencies to the committee.
The revelation came as House members fought back, alleging a systematic attempt by the Presidency and other interested parties to damage the credibility of the report produced by the Farouk Lawan led ad-hoc committee that investigated the implementation of the Federal Government subsidy regime.
It also emerged, yesterday, that Speaker Aminu Tambuwal refused entreaties from the State Security Service, SSS to retrieve the bribe passed on to Lawan by Otedola.  Tambuwal, it was learnt, insisted that his touching the money would mean tampering with the evidence.
The discovery that other oil interest groups allegedly paid bribes to the Lawan committee emerged from the work of the CP Ali Amodu-led Special Task Force investigating the scandal. There were also feelers from the Special Task Force that the $620, 000 bribe money admittedly received by Lawan may have been destroyed.

Lawan who has so far not formally appeared before the Police team investigating the scandal now has a deadline of tomorrow to appear before the Police or be declared wanted.
As a source said yesterday: “Lawan is to appear before the investigation team and say all he knows about the bribery allegations against him or risk the consequences as the Police is empowered by law to take such other lawful steps necessary to help with the investigations.”
Chairman of Zenon Oil, Chief Femi Otedola, who claimed to have given Rep. Farouk Lawan marked $620,000 as part payment of the $3m demanded from him as bribe appeared before the police panel on Tuesday during which he tendered both video and audio evidence of the transaction between him, (Otedola) and Lawan.
Source
A senior Police source told Vanguard yesterday that the investigating team has enough evidence, including the call logs of the discussions between Farouk and Otedola  on where, how and when the money will be collected, as well as the fact that Farouk went to Otedola’s house by 4 am to collect the money.

Poverty not Nigeria’s problem – Abdulsalami

Former Military Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, has said that Nigeria was not the only country in the world where there is poverty.
Abubakar spoke shortly after prayers to mark his 70th birthday anniversary at his hill top mansion in Minna, Niger State. He spoke against the backdrop of incessant bombings by an Islamist sect with the aim of Islamising the country under Sharia law.
He said: “Yes, I believe there is poverty in Nigeria. But Nigeria is not the only country suffering from poverty and this should not be an excuse for what is happening.
We can’t give up
“Certainly, challenges are there all over the world not only in Nigeria. The whole world is full of challenges. I know in Nigeria you will say we have the Boko Haram and kidnappers.
“It is true there are all these things but we should keep on trying and make sure that those misguided elements are eliminated to give peace a chance.

Euro 2012: ‘Dutch need miracle to qualify’

THE HAGUE (AFP) – The Netherlands need a miracle to qualify for the Euro 2012 quarter-finals, the country’s press said on Thursday, a day after the Oranje were beaten 2-1 by Germany.
“We need a miracle,” De Telegraaf said, although it conceded that Bert van Marwijk’s misfiring side still had “a last chance” when they play Portugal in Lviv, Ukraine, on Sunday.
With two defeats on the bounce, however, the beaten World Cup 2010 finalists’ hopes were “slim” and dependent on other results in Group B, the daily added.
Left-leaning daily Volkskrant for its part pointed the finger at the national team’s style of play in Kharkiv.
There was “no cohesion between attack, defence and midfield for long periods of the tie,” it assessed, criticising van Marwijk’s choice of Arsenal’s Robin van Persie up front in place of Schalke 04′s Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.
